First Look at Trek XI in EW

It does look like Bana is wearing a bit of a forehead appliance -- look at the little "flap" by the bridge of his nose.

What is it with Hollywood's obsession of youth? Why the hell can't a story have people of the appropriate age group? A captain should not look like s/he's in their late teens, but should be older. What? Older people can't be attractive too? All women must either have big breasts or are anorexically skinny?

Come on Hollywood. Get some balls and stop looking at the dollar.

Chris Pine is knocking 30 - not sure how that's "late teens" and the concept of "stop looking at the dollar" is a frankly bizzare statement to make - what is it you think that "Hollywood" is? A charity?

Chris Pine turns 28 next month.
Zachary Quinto is 31.
Eric Bana turns 40 next month.
Zoe Saldana is 30.

What would you consider to be "the appropriate age group" for this story?

Besides, Chris and Zach have to play Kirk and Spock at varying points in the lives of their characters, from the academy (late teens, early twenties) to when they were on the Enterprise (early thirties). It makes sense to cast people in that age demographic.

Cool. I notice that Pine is wearing dark contact lenses. :)

I wondered if they'd go to those lengths. But Quinto's prosthetic earlobes are still my favorite little tidbit of overwrought attention to canon. Can't have Spock without those danglin' lobes!

So much for the "it doesn't matter what the actors look like" nonsense we used to hear around these parts. Of course it matters. :rommie: I just had no idea how much it would matter to Abrams & co.

However, the way Pine is posing in that shot is rather odd...why are they having him look villainous? And he does come off as villainous rather than simply "bad-ass."

eh? I don't think you will you find anyone who suggested Spock would not have his iconic ears - so that iis a bit of a straw man.

Making sure that the boots matched the original would be overwrought attention to canon - Spock's ears? no.

I'm not sure it's evil so much as bad-ass and full of fire. I read extreme self-confidence and self-satisfaction. Cocky. Funny, but I don't really remember ever seeing that expression on Shatner's Kirk before. It makes sense that young Kirk would have it, though.

Quinto' Spock looks very introspective. The eyes. Something in the look. Those eyes. (Well, eye, since we see only one.)

Maybe it's the gold glow that's giving it that effect.

Pine doesn't look at all evil in that shot to me. Rather a bit impish, perhaps.

I don't know how much I dig the tiny circle beard Nero is sporting. I guess it is kinda like the mirror universe, but really my first reaction was "street punk/wrestler".

Re: First Look at Trek IX in EW

Sweeeeeeeet!!! Can you add a Sombrero and make that an avatar for me, please?

How is this?

Re: EW Previews Star Trek Comic Con Posters - With First Cast Photos

Temis, my first thought about Pine was "this is Kirk just about to cheat on the Kobayashi Maru test." I agree with the "impish" diagnosis.
