First installment of The Adventure Games released!

While not unexpected, and perhaps one could argue with the license fee that it's quite fair, it still sucks not being able to play these in the US. :(

Re: No free DW games for outside the UK

Sigh. I can see my arguments are falling on deaf ears.

No, we understand your arguments just fine, and we're listening. We just disagree with them.

If you want to be elitist, fine. It's your choice.

No one is being elitist. It's just a fact -- at the end of the day, Doctor Who isn't made for us, it's made for them.

The BBC is going to be out of business in a few years anyway

I'm not sure why you'd say that, since the BBC doesn't need to turn a profit to keep itself afloat.

I think I'm finished on this BBS for awhile. This is the third time I've gotten pissed on for posting a thread in the last few days,

I'm sorry you felt like you were being "pissed on," but I can assure you that nothing I said was intended as a personal attack.

Re: No free DW games for outside the UK

Remember even though we are fans of the show and buy books, DVDs, and other merchandise as far as the BBC and the show's production staff are concerned only the license paying UK fans count not us. I remember reading somewhere during a Q&A after a screening of "The Eleventh Hour" in Canada Moffat was asked what he thought about their opinions and he pretty much told them he didn't care because the show is made for the UK audience not them. This isn't anything new though as shows with a worldwide fanbase usually only cater to the fans in there country of origin.

Oh come on, you really believe production doesn't look beyond the UK audience in the decision making process (creative or otherwise) in the making of this show? The freakin' running time of most the episodes are made with international sales in mind. Unless it's a creative decision that most storylines can't support themselves past the 45 minute mark. ;)

So yes, Moffat may write with the UK audience primarily in mind, but I'd hardly say the US (or any other international audience) doesn't count.

Re: No free DW games for outside the UK

So if you've downloaded and played the game, would you have still done so if you had to pay for it outright? I'm just trying to gauge whether or not the game itself is good enough to directly pay for...

As a single episode, probably not, unless they go for iTunes level prices of say $2 per episode. However, as we're getting four episodes this year, I'd say they will wait and make the price apply to a download of all four. That'll give you 4-5 hours of gameplay.

Well, it took some jiggery pokery but I was able to get this to work. It's a lot of fun just because it's Who and all but it is quite linear and simple. I agree to wait for a really cheap price.

Re: No free DW games for outside the UK

How long until it's available via krit smorrent I wonder...

(Can't say the real word :) Only joking Mods)

I'm surprised at all the non Brits moaning about having to pay for this, after all the times Yanks have told me about free legal episodes of stuff on the internet only to find I can't get them over here I think this is quite justified.

I will agree in waiting for a quite cheap price if you are going to buy them though. Due to the age range of the game and what not it's not quite a proper doctor who game, more like a really cool freebie on their website, a step beyond the flash games and what not.

Agreed, a lot of material is location sensitive, it just so happens that for once it affects people in the US.

Can we just rejoin the Empire for a bit, then revolt again after we've gotten all the free stuff we want?

Oh come on you took all our technology in exhange for help in WW2, we bankrupted ourselves and lost our Empire holding the line against Hitler. Aren't we allowed one tiny perk, just one free Dalek related computer game...pretty please?

Re: No free DW games for outside the UK

Sigh. I can see my arguments are falling on deaf ears. Fine. Fuck the games. They aren't important.

I'll end my contributions to the Doctor Who board by posting this link to the Doctor Who Information Network blog - this is the big Canadian fan club - which covers my arguments and those of others a lot better than I evidently have,

"I've had enough of this crap" is the key phrase. If you want to be elitist, fine. It's your choice. The BBC is going to be out of business in a few years anyway and Syfy or Channel 5 or something will pick up production of Doctor Who and we won't have to be clusterfracking over this all time. I honestly hope it happens sooner or later. The BBC needs to join the 21st century, badly. As do, evidently, certain individuals on this board.

I think I'm finished on this BBS for awhile. This is the third time I've gotten pissed on for posting a thread in the last few days, which suggests the atmosphere here has soured. Have fun in the sandbox.

Alex

Talk about throwing your toys out of the Pram.

Can't wait to try this later.

The Beeb deserve credit for branching out into other media to explore different forms of story-telling. Stuff like this really does make the license fee worth paying!

Hell if anything we should be annoyed at BBC America. They're the ones who have the US license. They should be carrying all the video clips n' stuff.

If the BBC has any sense, they'll releasing the game through some online service like Steam.

Re: No free DW games for outside the UK

Do they even have Intel Core Duo Macs over there

Of course not. What do you think we are, a developed western nation or something?

In the end, we US'ers won't be paying any more or less than the UK fans, when you balance it against the license fee.

Exactly, nobody is being "screwed over" here.

Just finished, runs very slow for me in places, especially the cut scenes, where you have to wait for the animation to catch up to the dialogue a lot. Also ran into a bug with a save file that crashed the game and while playing as Amy she got stuck on a bit of debris that meant I had to restart from a previous save. But otherwise, an enjoyable game. Worth the price of a cornetto I'd say.

What are your system specs?

Well, I'm glad everyone else can get in... alas, I can't do anything once the game loads - my mouse cursor has vanished, and alt-tabbing out of the game makes it appear in the centre of the screen, only to vanish again when I alt-tab back in! I've tried reinstalling with no effect.

Oh, and when I try to send a bug report, I get a text file saying that no e-mail has been sent because a directory couldn't be found, or something like that! So I can't even request official help!

Anyone got any suggestions?

OPERATING SYSTEM: Windows Vista, Service Pack 1, 32-bit
MEMORY: 4GB
BROWSER: Firefox
GRAPHICS CARD: ATI Radeon HD 3600 series
CPU: Quad-core (so should definitely be good enough)
MOUSE: Microsoft mouse
