First Contract in Montana?

You have to give credit to Roddenberry for making Chekov "Russian" and still never referring to the "Soviet Union", despite the running gag about his personal pride for the region of his birth.

Here's a thought. Is America even still considered America after WWIII? I realize Data said something about Montana being in North America, but I always thought that was said just for the movie goers so they know where they are located. But you would think that after all the devastation you would wonder if the inhabitants even still considered America America.

And besides, Starfleet headquarters have always been in "America" so that seemed most logical.

From what I've seen on screen so far the United Earth government is a heavily decentralised federal deal, so there would still be local national identities and probably still called the same, but it's a good point, take a looK at Europe before WWI or even before 1990 and you'll see countries that no longer exist like the Soviet Union, Austro-Hungarian Empire, and Ottoman Empire

Well that's what I was wondering about. During TNG, I remember some of the characters calling what are now countries "old nation states". So I would assume even though they may call the places by their proper name, that maybe by the time it isn't really what it was anymore.

I'd say so, even the EU member states today are not fully independent states in the old sense, so can only imagne 300 years from now and adding a Untied Earth govt on top of that.

Sure they are. Why? Because they retain the legal and de facto right and authority to leave the European Union unilaterally. They've chosen to delegate parts of their sovereignty to the European Union, but they remain "masters of the treaty" who have a right that does not exist amongst non-sovereign states -- the right to seccession.

besides being an american movie, that would a place undevistated by a nuclear war, unlike the major capitals and improtant global cities.
Good point. Nukes are unlikely to be used on Montana. There's not much there.
Not necessarily. I'm not sure how many missile silos are still active in Montana, but the state used to have one of the largest concentrations of ICBMs in the USA.
Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, and Missouri were all considered dense pack strike zones during the Cold War. Dense pack due to the number and location of ground strike impacts that would have occurred during WWIII. There were so many active silos in each state that nothing in the state would have survived a full nuclear exchange between the USA and the Soviet Union.

This is the 1990 FEMA probable strike map for Montana. The small circles are ground impact detonation locations. The larger circles are air-burst detonation locations.

This is the 1990 FEMA fallout projection map for the USA. The large red patches are the fallout from all of our ICBM silos being destroyed. The small red lines are the fallout from our cities being destroyed.

I don't live in MT, but according to the site, the area I live in is yellow (few survivors)... Thank God. I've watched Threads and I really don't want to eek out an existance like the characters in the movie had to after the attack.

Actually theres no specific withdrawl clause in any EU treaty, one is proposed in the coming treaty but thats likley to be rejected in the referendum anyway.

In any case theres the principle of rebus sic stantibus, or "things standing thus." Under this principle, a state may withdraw from a treaty which has no withdrawal provisions only if there has been some substantial unforeseen change in circumstances, such as when the object of the treaty becomes moot or when a material breach is committed by a treaty party.

Were also so interconnected economically now that it would be very difficult.

The whole concept of a nation state is problematic anyway nations and states are rarely one in the same, and you'd think in the ST universe after three World Wars we'd finally drop the nationalism

Ok, fine. We'll make first contact (er, I mean contract :cardie:) in Canada. Zefram Cochrane will be Canadian instead of American, and Starfleet Headquarters will eventually be set up in Ontario, Canada. Just don't let the Mexicans have it.

For acting dollars? Probably a good idea these days...Canada's still a bargain comparitively.

Quick reply says he's intelligent, but not experienced. His pattern suggests 2-dimentional thinking.

Why the USA for first contact and why the USA for like everything?

Federation = Demcocracy, Democray is USA
* Starfleet = USA
* USA = Diversity
*Starfleet has a diverse range of non humans in starfleet
* Starfleet is the leading force in the fedaertion
* The United States is a power nation and super power:cardie:

Now, I do live in the USA and was born here as were my parents and grandparents. My heritage is British, German, American Indian and Gypsy. I Do not go around preasching that the United States is the greatest country ever, that its the best at everything. In fact I really dislike the typical US ego. Its one country with "democracy". Im just going to jump to the point that they could of picked any country because the USA is not without its flaws.

When all hell was brakingloose in Europe in WWI and WWII we(United States of America) sat on our ass (arse, if you prefer) until the War effected us, then we jump in.

American ego is overrated. I'm from Canada and we're just as arrogant up here (about how good we are at hockey, no less). I've met people from all over the world, and most of them are arrogant in their own way. It's national pride, that's all.

As for WWI and II, the majority of the people didn't want a war (less so after the first one, where we came in at the end, bailed out the allies, and were then basically told to go piss up a rope by France and Britain). If we go to war without popular support, we're warmongers. If we wait, we're accused of coming in late. In that time, without instant communication and satellite recon, it was seen as a European problem. The Holocaust only became widespread knowledge after we were involved anyway.

America, as a superpower, will always be damned if they do and damned if they don't. We didn't go into Rwanda, and people say we let genocide happen. We went into Kosovo, and we're war mongers.

That's the way the world works.

sad isn't it. You do one thing and your one extreme, and if you dont then your at the polar opposite.

It's always been that way. I'm sure that 200 years ago, Britain was catching hell for the same sort of thing.

You can't please everyone.

Wow, the posted pics in this thread of that are disturbing, but also very interesting, thx for the pics...depressing but the analysis had to be done.

They should have landed in Butte, MT! The best pork chop sandwich in the world!

Now that's more like it!

I'm going to assume that this map has the fallout traveling east because I've heard that Cheyenne, WY was actually #3 on the Soviet's hit list if they ever went to nuclear war.
