Just because You Can Change Everything, Doesn't Mean You Should.

It can't do "Star Trek" one iota of harm.

If this movie tanks, all the fans who are horrified by the changes will have exactly what they have now in terms of "Star Trek" and they can congratulate one another on being right.

What they can't have is what they want from the studio. Not now, not next year, not ever...because the only people to whom that makes sense are a few million trekkies and their numbers are dwindling rather than growing.

Pehaps... but driving away the (according to you) few of Us left, may not be such a great thing either.

It can't hurt anything, where Trek movie and television production is concerned...because there is none.

It's not all that likely to negatively impact the declining merchandising revenues of the Franchise either, since there's been no directive (that we're aware of) demanding that all the comics and novelists and so forth march in lockstep with the new movie from this day forward. They can have it both ways: if the movie's a huge success everyone who licenses Trek will want to use its designs and continuity, and if it isn't then the licensees can continue to provide an alternative "safe haven" for what's left of fandom.

The risk here in changing everything for the movie is minimal and the potential rewards considerable.

It does look like an octopus in the trailer, complete with tentacles. Playmates just fucked the toy up. And not for the first time, I might add.

I can just imagine it in action with tentacles ripping starships apart.

It's a giant space squid. It freeks me out and does not give me a single trek feeling in my hole body.

That's what I like about. It's something we haven't seen.

BINGO! And yes I do like it cause its got that Anime look to it. Also doesn't look like a squid to me... maybe its tentacles aren't extended?

I looks more like a space sea cucumber. I like it. I get the sense that Nero is a radical, so his ship being so strange fits.

Since cephalopods in general are an extremely varied lot, (and becoming more so with each new species discovered) that sort of generalization doesn't mean a great deal. It also kind of looks like one of those fuzzy/feathery things you see stuck on a fly-fisherman's hat. Be that as it may, it was determined long ago that Space Octopus was the approved designation for Nero's ship, just as the apparatus it deploys is a Giant Space Drill (or GSD.) Adherence to nomenclatural convention, and all that, you know?

I like it and realize that it's just a computer generated image that has no bearing on how I feel about the franchise as a whole, one way or the other.

Fresh new take from a fresh new movie that's being reinvented from an old, stale franchise. What's not to like?

I think the 'tentacles', (seen in still pics and the trailer as that long spiky thing extending from space to the platform just above the planet surface) are here shown in the 'stowed' position.

Meh. I don't have many problems with the design. I like it a lot more than the lame-o new Enterprise, that's for sure. I like it that not all ships of the 24th century Romulan Empire are emerald-green with predatory birds embossed, etched or painted onto their hulls. Or that have easily discernable warp nacelles and bridges. The old TOS Romulan ships didn't follow the same color and design schemes, either...and made the Empire look more complex in its tastes for spacecraft than the 24th century series made it appear.
