Firefly

The more of this series I watch the more I actually like Malcolm Reynolds. Yeah I know I said a couple nights ago that I didn't like how he treated Kaylee in Shindig, but even in that episode he still found a way to make her happy. The thing I love about him though is how loyal he is to his crew and how the crew reciprocates. That scene in Ariel where he locked Jayne in an airlock ready to dump him for going to the feds, that was an incredible scene. Now I'm watching the next episode and the return of Nishka and this scene with the crew rescuing the captain is so much fun.

Speaking of Jayne, am I supposed to like Jayne because I don't. I find him annoying, and he gets the crew into trouble more than he's actually useful. I was hoping Jaynetown would make him likeable, but I was actually rooting for Mal to go through with dumping him.

I also rented the movie Serenity from the Library today so it will be a complete rewatch. Yes, I know Wash dies in the movie (And I think it was that which started the whole Mame thing on the Internet)
I love Jayne, him, Kaylee, and River were my favorite characters, with everyone else pretty much equal after them.
Maybe suppose might have been the wrong word. Maybe gaging fan popularity might have been closer to what I’m going for. Posting here and hearing other comments, it sounds like Mal, Zoe, and Kaylee were the most popular characters. I’m liking all the characters except for Jayne and I’m a little bummed we won’t know more about Book.
If you really want to know about Book there is The Shepherd's Tale.

The two best episodes happened on Serenity her self with Out of Gas and Objects in Space. Really bummed that the last episode was when Summer Glau really got to shine as River. I know the movie is very much a River story but I didn’t remember River not being as big in this series as I thought she was going to be. Yeah she had spurts of greatness (killing the three guys in War Stories, this episode, Ariel) but like the rest it could have been so much more. I can see why the fan base was furious with the cancelation of this show. It’s amazing though. In this era of streaming and the fact that it’s been less than 20 years since Firefly and Dollhouse, there hasn’t been talk about a possible revival. I would watch either series.

Overall, I can’t say I’m a brown coat, but I’m glad I watched Firefly. Looking forward to Serenity the movie. This was a very enjoyable series.

I love Firefly, I watched it back when Fox aired it back in '02, I also remember going a town over to see Serenity on opening night, I had hoped it would have done well enough to get a sequel or the show back (hey a guy can dream).

Nowadays I recommend The Expanse to anyone that likes Firefly (I think the Serenity and the Roci have similar crew dynamics).

I’ve mentioned the Expanse a few times. I’m starting to think maybe The Expanse is a modern day Firefly.

Just been going through a rewatch with my 14yo watching for the first time. He's loving it. We've only got one episode and the movie to go now.

It was just one of those shows that managed to get everything right from the start. Perfect cast, in-depth characters, each with back story that was hinted at and explored slowly, brilliant writing, world building was great, and Serenity herself is one of the great spaceships (up there with the Millennium Falcon for me).

In terms of the writing there were so many simple lines that just completely nailed the character's motivation. A good example was Mal in The Train Job right at the end where the sheriff is going on about how when a man finds out the full story he then has a choice and Mal's response is simply "I don't believe he does." Gives you his entire character in one line. Or another one in Safe where Simon is wondering why Mal came back, and Mal's response is "You're on my crew." Demonstrating that once he's accepted someone he'll protect them with his life.

I had the same thought about Firefly yesterday, with all of the revivals coming out I'm kind of amazed we haven't gotten one from Firefly.
For such a short lived show it really has a pretty devoted fan base, and still gets quite a bit of interest. It was a big deal when the novels and new Boom! Studios comics came out last year, and it's pretty impressive to see that amount of attention given to tie ins for a show that ran 16 years ago, and only had 14 episodes and one movie.

I'm not sure Firefly should be revived at this point because it could never match fan expectations besides the practical difficulties of getting most of the original crew back together (and would you ignore Serenity or do the show post Serenity to account for the real time passed and all the actors 15 years older now).

At some point one has to accept the fact that this show was axed when it could have become one of the greates Sci Fi shows of all time, pop in the DVDs from time to time and lean back with a smile to watch the crew go at it once more.

That does bring up one advantage leaving it to just the books and comics has, you don't have to worry about actors ages or availability or anything like that.

Nathan Fillion has been pretty busy over the last decade with Castle and The Rookie. Gina Torres has Suits and now her spinoff Pearson. Adam Baldwin had Chuck and The Last Ship. Just getting their schedules to line up is probably enough of a challenge itself. Add in Whedon being consumed by two Avengers movies and now a new series for HBO, and I'm not surprised there hasn't been a revival yet.

Well, this short rewatch is over. Just finished the movie. I forgot that Book had died in this one as well, and I was kinda bummed it happened off screen. In fact, as entertaining as this film was, Shepard dying off screen was a little bit of a issue for me. Also, Why didn't River help sooner? Once her secret was in the open, she actually got better, so she watches pretty much the entire crew take on the Reavers? Not only that, but once Simon got shot, River finally decides to take matters into her own hands and take care of the reavers single handedly? Maybe she was afraid, and watching Simon almost die let a fuse, but man she could have been really helpful.

I enjoyed this series overall. I actually did start finding the dialog distracting a little, but I was watching with subtitles on so that helped. This was a great cast, and it really is one of the better sci fi musical scores I've heard. I really do love the western mixed in with the sci fi.

I noticed two actors were in this movie that would become pretty prominant now. Chiwetel Ejiofar and Sarah Paulson. This movie maybe had no stars in it, but they did have future stars.

Unfortunately I think the time for that has passed. The major issue with the show having such a great cast is that they've all remained fairly busy since, so there hasn't really been space for a revival. And now they're all so much older that a revival would need so much back story to fill in what's happened since and why they're all still together that I think it would struggle.

We're far more likely to end up with a reboot at some stage. Which, given the chemistry and talent of the original cast, seems unlikely to ever recapture the magic.

I think a Firefly revival was much more feasible back when Serenity came out, the ship has sailed at this point.

Nathan had a few Firefly cast members guesting on Castle over the years. But he never had the one that would have made the most sense: Ron Glass, reviving his role as Det. Harris from Barney Miller. Both shows took place in the fictional 12th precinct (used on TV because there IS no real 12th). Both Harris and Castle were authors, so there was a reason for them to know each other. The plot could have concerned an old cold case from the 70s coming up again, and Castle bringing Harris out of retirement to help. I'd have kvelled.

Stupid question time ..... Who now owns the Firefly IP? Did it end up with Disney as part of the FOX purchase?

Reason I'm wondering, if it is indeed with Disney, they love to milk the shit out of their IP's .... Perhaps more material in the future .... ? Thoughts?

You can find talented actors with good chemistry anywhere. What you would need is a showrunner who is passionate about bringing the show back to life.

I cannot say for 100% certain, but last I knew the series was owned by 20th Century Fox Television, so would now be owned by Disney. Serenity, however, was distributed by Universal, so I am less certain about it's current ownership.

^yeah, after a bit of Google-fu, it looks like Universal bought the movie rights from Fox to make Serenity. Wonder if it was a one-off license or if they still have them? It does look like the Firefly IP did go to Disney in the sale. Also might still be with Joss and his production company. Since Joss has done a bunch of stuff for Disney, might not be an issue to start making some kind of continuation or reboot. Bigger issue would be getting the talent back on board....

Q2

If Whedon really wanted to do it, it could happen - Netflix or Amazon would love this kind of thing. Yeah, there would be new characters.
