Firefly first-time/rewatch (NO SPOILERS, please)

Meh. Just what the board needs: another Firefly watch thread :) Myself and a few others haven't seen it/want to rewatch, so here goes for anyone who wants to join in. And I guess it's sorta timely/appropriate as I believe it's the 10th anniversary?

First thoughts: saw Serenity a few years ago but probably like many non-Firefly fans couldn't really make head nor tail of it, and barely recall it now. The main things that left an impression were a kick-ass fight at the beginning and the main lead, who seemed very much a cool wise-cracker in the Han Solo mode. Errr...that's it. But I've been reliably led to believe that there is much to discover and enjoy over the next 14 weeks. :)

Re: Firefly first-time/rewatch

So we're going to watch one episode a week then...? When do we start? :)

Re: Firefly first-time/rewatch

Well, it's a quiet autumnal Sunday evening so I'm probably going to share a bottle of Pinot Noir and slip ep 1 in tonight. Though I can't promise I'll post anything :)

Re: Firefly first-time/rewatch

I'm afraid I'll have to wait a few days more before my DVD arrives. In the mean time, we can compare notes about our Pinot. ;)

Re: Firefly first-time/rewatch

Science channel is showing a marathon of all the episodes today followed by a reunion of the cast tonight.

Re: Firefly first-time/rewatch

It's kind of hard to have a marathon about that many episodes. Grumble grumble grumble.

As to the comment about Serenity being incomprehensible: my own experience is that a few people from the office went to see it. I asked them what they thought and they said very good and then they'd heard there had been a television series made from the film [sic]. Not quite I said; would you like to borrow the DVDs? Result: a whole office full of Firefly converts.

Re: Firefly first-time/rewatch

Eek ... time ... slipping ... away.

I'll try to watch when I can. Can I have some of that Pinot?

Re: Firefly first-time/rewatch

Okay I will watch episode one sometime in the next 12 hours and wait for lurok's first review post to comment on it.

I also saw Serenity first (and it so confused me that the first episode is also called Serenity, lol).

I've gone off pinot other than ones way out of my price range so I'll be watching it with beer and some Vietnamese I suspect. Which will be nicely fitting.

My flickr Firefly folders have 221 photos in them. I am ready, sooooo ready to spam naked Mal at y'all when the time is right. I aim to misbehave kids!!

Re: Firefly first-time/rewatch

A couple of weeks ago I completed a rewatch of the series and the movie. 'Twas good fun and I enjoyed it more than the last time I watched the show a couple of years ago.

Re: Firefly first-time/rewatch

Since I just finished a Farscape re-watch last weekend, and a BSG re-watch several months ago, I've been at a loss for what to watch next.

This sounds like a great idea. Fairly short, but fun anyway, plus the movie. It's been a couple years since I watched the DVD's.

Also, are there blu-rays for this & how good are they compared to the DVD's? I ask since the Farscape blu-rays are apparently not much better than the DVD's.

Re: Firefly first-time/rewatch

For anyone who's interested, the Pinot Noir was rather nice. Dark raspberry, cherry and rich boysenberry fruit flavours in a soft and elegantly supple wine with a hint of spice. :) Shiny.

So...watched pilot but awaiting others to view. Just as background though, I've seen clips of a cult BBC s-f show called Blake's Seven, which I was getting vibes from in Firefly. Does anyone know if Whedon ever saw it? It's probably just coincidence.

Re: Firefly first-time/rewatch

I read a book once, The Centauri Device by M. John Harrison in which I swear the protagonist is an inspiration for Mal. If I ever see Whedon at a con (does he do them?) or get trapped in an elevator with him I will be asking him about this somewhat obscure piece of early space cowboy saga.

Um. What?
13 episodes. The marathon ran all day from moring until the special at 10PM. What was hard about that?

My point exactly. What special?

The cast reunion roundtable discussion and panel at ComicCon, shown as a 1 hour special at 10PM on the science Channel.

Still not sure what you're driving at - was it too many episodes or too few for a marathon?

Re: Firefly first-time/rewatch

I have the series and movie on a Zune and often let the series play while I'm working.

The marathons are great because I'll occasionally catch something that I've missed. One thing that I only noticed a few months ago was in the pilot, close to the beginning ... Nice little detail.

I have the reunion show (Firefly: Browncoats Unite) on the DVR.

Here's a nice little promo music video that SCI did for the marathon. If you're spoiler-averse, please don't watch ...

Re: Firefly first-time/rewatch

Hulu just has "Safe" for free, so I'm watching that. Funky language, but it can be followed fairly readily.
