Firebird's Sketch of the Week Series

Sorry for just the single simple linework illustration this week, all. I got the new Covid booster on Friday and that kicked me in the ass for most of yesterday, which robbed me of my usual drawing time. I was lucky to have the motivation and energy to just do this.

Drawing 564 / 2024 Artwork 97: Madoka Ayukawa from Kimagure Orange Road... at this point, one of my favorite characters to draw.

Don't be sorry - anything from you is worth waiting for. And your hair shading technique for Madoka Ayukawa is one of my favourites! :adore:

I hope you're feeling much better now?

Nicely done, Columbo looks like he's just going to spill his theories, and I guess it's not easy being green AND a Lieutenant Junior Grade at the same time. ;)

Been a very long week due to some IRL things at work, but I didn't let that keep me down over at Studio Firebird! I managed to get the story for EVA-Trek's second season finale broken, so that means the next stage is script outlines and drafts, which officially transitions season two from pre-production into full-on production! These next fifteen episodes are gonna be the best Star Trek series I have in me to write, and I can't wait to get them done.

But anyways, to the real reason you're here - this week's illustrations!

Drawing 567 / 2024 Artwork 100: Kurumi Haraga from 100 Kanojo. I never particularly cared for the previous portrait I drew of her last year, so I took another shot that I'm much happier about.

Drawing 568 / 2024 Artwork 101: EVA-Trek season 2 cast photo, Ensign Rei Ayanami, USS Nerv. I'm keeping the idea I had in the season 1 finale where Rei's growing her hair out, but not the more stylized design I'd originally went with.

Drawing 569 / 2024 Artwork 102: Portrait of the Artist in the Guise of a Brannigan. Experimented with some mixed media gel pens for the coloring on this piece of Futurama's Captain made of pure ego, based on Ducreux's Self-Portrait of the Artist in the Guise of a Mockingbird.

Drawing 571 / 2024 Artwork 104: EVA-Trek season 2 character key art - Dr. Sorrd.

Sorrd joins the crew of the USS Nerv during the ship's extensive refit following the events of season 1. He's a neurologist who, along with CMO Hitomi Amagi, maintains the physical health of the ship's Evangelion pilots. Part of his tasks includes aiding in efforts to retrieve Yui Ikari and Kyoko Z. Soryu from the cores of the USS Hakone and USS Kyoto, respectively.

As a full Vulcan, Sorrd is frequently befuddled by the illogical behavior of much of the human crew - the Eva pilots in particular - yet has grown accustomed to it in his years of serving with Starfleet. It is rumored Sorrd has familial ties to some of Vulcan's most renowned High Priestesses.

Drawing 572 / 2024 Artwork 105: Once I found out yetserday that Fred Tatasciore voices not only Lt. Shaxs on Lower Decks, but is also the new voice of Genma Saotome in Studio MAPPA's remake of Ranma 1/2, the following illustration came to me in a vision.

Once again, Star Trek and anime manage to find a way to remain intertwined.

And I think this gives me an idea for a drawing series featuring the other characters from Lower Decks...

Genma Saotome Shaxs is awesome!

Brilliant job as always, @Firebird!

I'm all for seeing more of the Lower Decks characters, so I'm intrigued about your idea. I have a few plans for them myself, but it's just finding the time to do something about it. I hope you manage to eke out some spare time somehow.

I'm trying to find a bit more time myself! I'm knee-deep into writing EVA-Trek's second season, so that's taking up a sizable chunk of my free time, but I always set aside time on Saturdays to draw. Stay tuned for next week's post!

And a fun little update from the EVA-Trek second season writer's room: Script outlines are now done for episodes 1, 2, 4, and half of 5. The reason episode 3 isn't done yet is because it's actually the sixteenth episode for season two! After getting through the story breaks for the season, I realized I had a long section in the first half of the season that didn't have an episode focusing on the Eva pilots, so I ended up breaking the story for another Rei and Kaworu-focused episode in less than three hours a couple weeks ago!

At this point, that brings the total anticipated episode count of EVA-Trek up to a total of 74... only five episodes away from matching The Original Series. You know how tempting it is to slot another five in across seasons three through five so I can say that I wrote as much as TOS?
