Drawing #165 / 2022 Drawing #28: Evangelion's Ryoji Kaji models the redesign of the Starfleet uniform from Star Trek: Picard's second season. If they keep changing the design every season of each show, there is no way I'm going to be able to continue to keep up and draw them all.

Drawing #166 / 2022 Artwork #29: I decided to revisit an original character design I originally did last summer to change things up a bit. Of course, me being me, I threw a little Trek touch in there.

Missed the mid-week drawing update post, so this one will be a little bit lengthier than normal.

Drawing #167 / 2022 Artwork #30: Gunfighter Yotsuba Nakano from The Quintessential Quintuplets. Modeled her outfit based off of John Wayne's costume in Rio Bravo, one of my favorite westerns.

Drawing #168 / 2022 Artwork #31: Kaname Chidori and her paper fan of doom from Full Metal Panic.

Drawing #169 / 2022 Artwork #32: Yui Yuigahama from OreGairu (My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU) models the new female uniform from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. This one was interesting because it's my first time experimenting with copic markers. Gotta say, these guys are a game-changer! It cut the amount of time to complete a color piece in half!

Drawing #170 / 2022 Artwork #33: Shouko Komi from Komi Can't Communicate tries out her very own Monster Maroon. Finally had a chance to do a full-color rendition of my favorite Starfleet uniform. And the irony is not lost on me that I used Uhura's uniform as the design reference.

NARRATOR: On the next EVA-Trek: Stardate 48422.1, the crew of the Nerv come upon a mysterious new entity unlike anything they've ever seen before. What kinds of danger will this encounter bring to Shinji and the rest? Find out next time with episode four, "Come Alive." Coming... whenever the author gets around to writing the script. Stay tuned for absolutely no guarantee of fanservice!

I was just thinking "He should do up a graphic novel", and then I refreshed the page only to have that pop up.

I was originally going to just do a one-shot comic of EVA-Trek last fall, but put a halt to that when it was turning into too much work to meet my self-imposed deadline. Instead, I've been writing it as a TV series since the beginning of the year, completing... quite a bit of work, multiple scripts, outlines, and the writer's guide:

Did a couple more drawings this week while I keep working with the copic markers to try to get used to them. There's definitely a bit of a learning curve, but I think I'm gradually getting there.

Drawing #173 / 2022 Artwork #36: Ruri Hoshino from Martian Successor Nadesico, but in an Evangelion art style.

Drawing #174 / 2022 Artwork #37: Kyoko and Godai from Maison Ikkoku.

On the EVA-Trek front, I started doing a little bit of work to try to figure out how the Eva Cages would fit into the saucer section of the USS Nerv and what areas would have to shift around. None of this will likely ever figure into the scripts for the series, but it's handy to have it visualized in my mind. It's kinda funny that I never realized I could just use the dorsal cargo hatches as the points of egress for the Nerv's Evas. Once that idea came to me, the layout flowed almost immediately. Each of the red icons represents the footprint of an Evangelion, so the Nerv could carry up to 6 units.

I'm glad I was able to spare Cetacean Ops from having to relocate. :D Only critical department that I'm gonna have to try to move around will be the saucer section cargo bays. Those might move to the upper decks of the saucer, off of the main shuttlebay.

Drawing #176 / 2022 Artwork #39: After seven hours of work, I completed this Lower Decks piece, based on the poster for Evangelion: Death and Rebirth. I can confidently say that this is my absolute favorite piece I've drawn since beginning my Sketch of the Week series last January.

Funnily enough, Facebook reminded me just now that it was exactly one year ago today that I started rewatching Evangelion for the first time since high school. That was a decision that would completely alter my artistic endeavors, and man am I glad I did!

Another busy week down at Studio Firebird! Doing more and more work with the copic markers as I gradually find my sea legs and gain confidence in how to use them. You can see the little test squiggles I'm doing in the corner of each drawing when I attempt to nail down the right color.

Drawing #177 / 2022 Artwork #40: From this past Monday, Nino from The Quintessential Quintuplets wishes you a Happy Pi Day.

Drawing #178 / 2022 Artwork #41: I hit the same number of drawings as there are episodes of TNG, so instead of doing yet another drawing set in Star Trek's 24th century, I turned things sideways and ran it through a Community filter. Drawing a holodeck in perspective by hand suuuuuuuucked!

Drawing #179 / 2022 Artwork #42: Tadano-kun discovers Komi-san's cosplaying hobby in this little Komi Can't Communicate manga panel. Of course, I couldn't help throwing in a little Star Trek reference.

    Drawing #180 / 2022 Artwork #43: A quick little drawing of Sesshomaru-sama from Inuyasha.

Drawing #181 / 2022 Artwork #44: A tribute to my favorite of Paramount's bizarre "Paramount Mountain" ad campaigns for their streaming service, featuring SpongeBob SquarePants singing "Sweet Victory," whilst Spock is vibing his green-blooded heart out.

I think I'm going to keep to these weekly update posts going forward, mainly out of pure laziness to have to do all the uploading and retyping each time I put out a new drawing. Anyways, on with the show!

Drawing #182 / 2022 Artwork #45: Miku from The Quintessential Quintuplets as Kyoko from Maison Ikkoku.

Drawing #183 / 2022 Artwork #46: Ichika from The Quintessential Quintuplets. Finally completed my individual portraits of each of the Nakano quints. This one was actually done in less than an hour over one of my lunch breaks this week at work, and I'm pretty satisfied with how it turned out.

Drawing #184 / 2022 Artwork #47: Sumi from Kanojo, Okarishimasu in a maid outfit. Look, when you're as deep into drawing anime and manga characters as I am at this point, you're gonna have to draw an embarrassed maid. I'm pretty sure it's a rule somewhere in the fandom bylaws.

Drawing #185 / 2022 Artwork #48: Micchon Shikimori from Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie, one of the upcoming spring 2022 anime season series I'm looking forward to. It's one of the first times I actually got started with the manga before the anime adaption was even a thing.

Drawing #186 / 2022 Artwork #49: Marin Kitagawa from My Dress-Up Darling cosplays as Captain Kathryn Janeway. Surprisingly, the most difficult part of this drawing was getting the Janeway hair drawn and colored correctly. The phaser rifle was simple compared to that! Between this and drawing #185, they finally decimated the marker I've been using for skin tones, which kinda sucks because I only just got this set of copics twenty days ago!
