FINAL CRUISE: The Last Season of The Last Ship

The girlfriend is supposed to make Granderson a more rounded character but instead she's just filler that wastes time. If this were 24, she would be a mole. Since this is The Last Ship, she'll just waste more time until finally she comes to her senses at the very end.

Did I miss something? How did the helo fire those missiles? I did not see any missile launchers on the helo. Did I just miss them or did the VFX people goof?

Hueys have missle wings. They used them in Vietnam.

Damn.. What an episode. Tom Chandler is setting himself up for President of the Federation.

The missile wing was not easy to see. I had to freeze frame the ep a couple times to see it. I am assuming the small box hanging over the left side of the helo is the missile wing.

Yeah, no kidding. Chandler reminds me a bit of Sheridan from B5, a similar ordinary man who is the hero that saves the world/galaxy a couple times over.

I'm with you on this one. The rocket launchers Hueys mounted in Vietnam were big cylinders or boxes that were clearly identifiable for what they were, and any anti-air missile launcher you'd mount on one today would be similarly easy to spot. In the dogfight scene the Huey looked like it was popping streamers out of its hind quarters.

It amuses me since the third season they keep needing to bring in outdated helicopters. And they manage to make it plausible, with this year's "it isn't modern enough to be infected" a total win!

And we do see some Air Force folks at the command centre this week. Just for some reason, an Air Force general doesn't get to contribute to the meetings. Then again, it's not like this show has a shortage of speaking roles anyway.

The Mexicans and Cubans were rather silly. I just know we're leading up to one of them saving the day, and by extension, the other one's ass.

Not necessarily. Both George H.W. Bush and Jimmy Carter are living former presidents with ships named after them, and the USS John S. McCain, an Arleigh Burke, was commissioned while the senator was still alive.
USS John S. McCain was named After McCains Sr and Jr, both of whom were wartime admirals, and not after Sen. McCain

When looking this up, it appears the ship was re-dedicated shortly after the Senator's passing to include him.

(I knew people on that ship, and this was a question for their surface warfare board :techman: )

So uh, where did Colombia get an Iowa Class, and how do they have the crew and know how to get it from a museum piece to working order?

I was thinking the same thing. There were only five ever built, and i think they're all museums now. My guess is that they stole the plans at some point and built their own...but they built it wrong cause one shot from a main gun would've torn a Burke apart. They ain't that tough.

On another front, Captain Green showed she was a Captain tonight. She deserves some extra respect.

And Mrs. Granderson???? Really?????

Anyone else find the dialogue between Tavo and Hector pointless? A lot of repetitive, redundant information that doesn't change anything. If this were one of those shows where the bad guy executes every henchman who gives him news he doesn't like, Tavo would be on his fifth military commander by now.

And it looks like they went all 24 again.

Given the Moby Dick references so far, I think this episode set up the Iowa class battleship pretty nicely as Chandler's white whale. I would not be surprised to see the battleship become a recurring nemesis for Chandler and the Nathan James throughout this season.

Close, 4 were built, 2 were cancelled. All four are museum ships now.

This episode sure was done on a budget, with all the battle stuff done from the perspective of the Nathan James bridge and CIC with the battle represented as computer screen graphics. Actually works for the episode, giving it a more realistic feel to how the battle would go on board a ship engaged in it.

So, Granderson's useless girlfriend finally serves her purpose. Usually, I would expect Granderson to survive, but this being the final season all cards are on the table, so to speak.

I know it's only been a few days in the show, and they are in the middle of a crisis, but when is the Acting Ensign* going to get an actual uniform?

Totally. Especially considering she was standing up to a living legend in this world, someone who could circumvent the chain of command on the Nathan James without the crew questioning much.

*Yes, I know he's not an "Acting Ensign" as he has in fact been properly commissioned. But I liked the Wesley Crusher comparisons we were making to him a few weeks back.

And none of them are likely able to be operational without years of costly refits, and that's with TODAY'S level of technical support, experience, and personnel. Doing it after 80(?) percent of the world's population died would likely be impossible. And pointless, as so many 100% operational ships were probably just tied up in ports all over the world ready to refuel and sail away. Last active one was almost 30 years ago, and they've likely been cut up a bit for use as museums. Unlike Nathan James, recovering from being a museum piece isn't just removing the velvet rope and tossing the cardboard cutouts overboard; for a lot of these ships, they change them structurally so that you can walk through it in a more normal way instead of how it would exist as a war ship. To be fair, the Iowa class has recovered from some lengthy mothball periods since they were built in the 30s/40s, but they were always kept stored in a way to help with that. As a museum piece, not so much. Things weren't removed with an eye towards being able to put them back again. And like i said, the support personnel, shipyards, experienced people you need to support that effort probably don't exist anymore in this fictional history.

And same problem as with the carrier discussion above: takes a metric ass ton of people to run that ship. If you have enough trained people to run one, you have enough for dozens of other ships instead. And they are armored all to hell for sure, with nice big heavy guns, but the tech on that just doesn't make sense in an age with smart bombs, guided missiles, etc. There are several reasons we don't make them anymore; the age of the battleship is over.

Since it is the final season, I think we will see a few major characters die. I would also not be surprised if the Nathan James does not sink in the end.
