Films that sucked, but everyone else liked...

Kill Bill
Sin City
Iron Man
Spider Man 2
X-Men (the first one)
LOTR
King Kong
Apocalypse Now
Blade Runner
Transformers (the first one, the sequel was recognized as shite for the most part)
Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith

And saving the worst for last:
Austin Powers

Austin Powers. When this thing came out so many people seemed to go ga-ga over it. I thought it was just a cruder take on Get Smart (TV series) and not nearly as clever.

^ I thought Spider-Man 3 was excellent. I don't understand the hatred it receives on this board.

Sequels to successful movies almost always do well, at least for a little while, even if they aren't very good. I think the fact that "Transformers 2" was the highest grossing movie of the year is more befuddling.

I'd expect a movie wouldn't make that much money unless people were watching it over and over again because it's, you know...good. Like "The Dark Knight" or "Titanic", for example. They have their problems, but if nothing else, they're well-made with impressive technical qualities and written with some eloquence.

I'd have to go with the scientific explanation too. I think the fact that the army was right there with the flame throwers as the mist was dissipating makes it hard to tie it in so directly with sacrificing the kid. Plus I think with the whole theme they were pushing that what was going on in the store was in some ways just as bad as what was going on outside, to have Mrs. Pat Robertson and her new found flock be even a tiny bit right would have undermined all that.

Although with an entire army right behind him you'd think they would have heard something before firing off a few shots. I always wondered what they did with the Impossibly Tall Creature too.

Don't want to start a while spoiler tagged thread, so I'll switch to vague generalities mode: -

The logic of it is subjective, depending on which world-view you take. If it's the scientific one, then yes, as you say they'd have got there soon either way. If you take the other view, where Him Upstairs is in charge then they would never have turned up if he didn't make that "sacrifice". Sure they were already coming, but would they have been already coming if he hadn't have done "it"? ;)

Spirited Away. A boring, pointless mess.

Is that the Oscar winning won where the little girl's parents are turned into pigs? If yes, then yes!

In it's defence, I should point out that it kept my brother's four kids (aged 3, 3, 5 & 7) ENTRANCED and, more to the point QUIET during it's entire 125 minute run. Anyone who has kids should be able to appreciate the inherent value in that. ;)

I can't stand The Godfather, which repeatedly gets voted the greatest film of all time.

I appreciate that it probably has great significance in cinematic history for reasons with which I might not be completely familiar. And some of my aversion may come from the fact pop cultural osmosis meant by the time I actually saw the film it seemed old hat because of so many references and parodies.

But I honestly don't think I could sit through that movie again unless I was paid some serious money, and given permission to yell at the screen as much as I liked.

I'd also add Godfather 2 as well.

I recently watched the trilogy for the first time. The Godfather widely gets hailed as the greatest film ever made, and people say pt.2 is even better than that!.....

The words "so what?" kept spinning around my head for the full 3+ hours of it

I'm also going to add "The Empire Strikes Back" and "The Usual Suspects" as films that initially didn't do anything for me. Yes, they both have fascinating scenes, and in particular the description of Keyser Soze halfway through the latter film always sends chills down my spine.

But let's face it, both films earned their reputations on their famous plot twists. :p

  • Æon Flux
  • Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me
  • National Treasure
  • Matrix (all three of them)
  • Solaris
  • I am Legend (but then, I find Will Smith very difficult to tolerate in anything he does)
  • James Bond (the one where most of it is a game of cards)
  • Ice Age (the first one was ok, I suppose)
  • The Madagascar films.
  • Star Wars (the faked original trilogy and the new trilogy but not the originals!)
  • Anything with 'super heroes' in it - I never bought into that particular genre.
  • Lord of the Rings -It's bored me to sleep several times; I don't think I've seen the last half of any of them.
  • The Potter films -but then, I never liked fantasy.
  • Aliens -What started out as a suspense thriller ended up as a direct-to-video-feel shoot-'em-up film in the sequel -what was up with that?
  • Minority Report
  • Bicentennial Man
  • Godzilla (in NY)

And now I'm going to read the thread -just to see if I've missed anything :rommie:

I've actually made it a point to see how long I can go without ever watching any of the Godfather movies. 30 years strong, so far. I figure someone someday will eventually flip out when I say I haven't seen them and make me watch.

Hell, I've owned them on DVD for more than a year and haven't watched any of them, though I did see the first one with a friend many moons ago.

I need to be in the right kind of mood to watch gangster films, and thus far I haven't particularly been in that place.

I'm 43 and have not seen any of them. Its not that difficult.

Given the circle I'm trying to smooch my way into, with a film producer who gave me his business card and owns an Italian restuarant, Strega's Ristorante in Boston, that plays a bunch of gangster movies (and where they reportedly shot the last episode of The Sopranos), it'll probably become a "requirement".

I never saw them. At this point the entire GODFATHER movie would be a cliche to me since I've seen parts of it parodied over the years. It'd be like watching Casablanca.

I've met people who never saw STAR WARS...guys over 30.
