Film scores you like

Admiral Buzzkill

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
Non-skiffy movies, that is.

I've been listening to a lot of movie soundtracks on Pandora in the last couple of weeks and have found myself buying some old movie scores at Amazon. "The Magnificient Seven" and Goldsmith's score for "Patton" are the latest.

Too many to name:

*Legends of the Fall (James Horner)-I never saw the movie

*Star Trek (Michael Giacchino)-Perfect from beginning to end

*The Empire Strikes Back (John Williams)-The Battle of Hoth is one of the best scores ever made; same for the sequence

*A New Hope (John Williams)-Listen to this and the prequel music; tell me which gives you goosebumps;)

*Superman: The Movie (John Williams)

*Glory (James Horner)

*Iris (James Horner)

*The Karate Kid (James Horner)

*Back to Titanic (James Horner)

;)

OK, no Sci-Fi, then? Well, that leaves out Star Wars and Raiders, and LOTR.

Henry V

Empire of the Sun

The Mission

Rudy (yes, cheesy, I know, but great to listen to)

Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story. I LOVED the score to this.

Cinema Paradiso (one of my all-time favorites)

Platoon (has Adaigo for Strings. That does it for me)

...and about a dozen more I'll think of 10 minutes from now.

*Scratches head*

I like a lot of film scores, but most of the soundtrack albums I own or have owned have been sci-fi or horror: The Omen, The Mephisto Waltz, The Grudge, The Shining, John Corigiliano's music for Altered States, Philip Glass' new score for Dracula, etc.

The only mainstream-movie soundtracks I own or have owned have been The Hours (Philip Glass again) and Michael Collins (by Elliot Goldenthal, IIRC)

Oh, and Michael Nyman's Piano Concerto, which was assembled out of his music for The Piano.

A couple of non-SF/F scores that have made me take note:

Dario Marianelli, Atonement - deservedly won the 2007 Best Original Score Oscar; "Elegy for Dunkirk" alone would be worthy.

Patrick Doyle, Henry V - as great as the actors' line deliveries are, the St. Crispin's Day speech would be nearly as good without Doyle's music, let alone the post-battle survey of the field.

The Saint
The Mask of Zorro
The Magnificent Seven
Out of Sight
North by Northwest
Vertigo
Tommy (not really a score per se...)
The Thomas Crown Affair (1999)
Blazing Saddles

A Bridge Too Far (e.g. March of the Paratroopers)
Air Force One
(e.g. Welcome On Board, Sir)
Amistad
(e.g. Dry Your Tears, Africa; Adams' Summation)
The Bridge On the River Kwai (e.g. Colonel Bogey March)
Casablanca (suite)
Chariots of Fire (e.g. Chariots of Fire)
Crash (e.g. A Really Good Cloak; Flames)
Crimson Tide (e.g. Roll Tide)
Finding Neverland (e.g. Dancing With the Bear; The Pirates)
Gladiator (e.g. Slaves to Rome; Elysium; The Battle)
The Godfather (e.g. Love Theme)
Gone With the Wind (e.g. Tara's Theme)
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (e.g. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Theme)
The Great Escape (e.g. The Great Escape March)
How the West Was Won (e.g. How the West Was Won heme)
The Hunt for Red October (e.g. Hymn To Red October)
The Illusionist (e.g. The Illusionist)
Kingdom of Heaven (e.g. Better Man; Wall Breached; Ibelin)
King's Row (part of the theme can be heard here)
Lawrence of Arabia (e.g. Overture)
Lucky Number Slevin (e.g. Flute Opening; Horse Falls)
Meet Joe Black
(e.g. That Next Place; Peanut Butter Man; Let's Face the Music and Dance)
The Professional (e.g. The Fight - Part 3)
The Rock (e.g. Navy Seals)
Requiem For A Dream
(e.g. Lux Aeterna; Summer Overture)
Romeo and Juliet
(e.g. A Time For Us)
Rough Riders
(link; the theme begins at 4:55)
Schindler's List
(e.g. Main Theme)
The Sea Hawk
(suite, part 1)
Slumdog Millionaire
(e.g. Latika's Theme; O...Saya)
Spy Game
(e.g. Operation Dinner Out)
The Third Man (e.g. The Third Man Theme)
Titanic (e.g. Southampton; Take Her To Sea, Mr. Murdoch)
Tombstone (suite)

An overlooked sci-fi film: K-Pax (Grand Central; Taxi Ride)
And a fantastic sci-fi score by Trevor Rabin: Armageddon (e.g. The Launch)

Herrman is wonderful - I didn't realize until recently that he'd written the theme for The Twilight Zone (much as I love that show).

There are only a couple of John Williams scores I really like enough to listen to on their own - the aforementioned "Empire Strikes Back" is one, and "E.T." is another. But those are both skiffy movies.

Continuing with the non-sf/fantasy thing - there are a couple of Horner scores that I particularly like, and if you've heard them you've heard most of his total and endlessly recycled output . One is "Glory."

I feel like I should run an extract from MediaMonkey...but I'm at work-

Batman
CutThroat Island
Godfather
King Kong (2005) - even if this counts as sci-fi it's worth a listen (and a watch)
The Pink Panther
Sherlock Holmes (2009)
Shrek
Fantastic Mr. Fox
V for Vendetta
Soapdish
Spider-Man 2
The Sting
Van Helsing
Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

"Lawrence Of Arabia" is another good one.

I didn't say "no sci-fi" I said no skiffy - sf/fantasy. Hence the topic being here rather than in the "Science Fiction & Fantasy" forum.

Non-skiffy? I notice not a lot of people are paying attention to that rule, but I shall.

1941, Jaws, Home Alone by John Williams

Pink Panther, The Odd Couple by Henry Mancini

Apollo 13 by James Horner

I like "Apollo 13" a lot, too. And Mancini's "Pink Panther" is classic.

"Braveheart" - I'm listening to this one but not sure I really like it. In some ways it's deeply annoying, but at least it's a bit of a departure for Horner.

Horner and Cameron supposedly had a falling out over the similarities of the "Aliens" score to ST:TWOK - for his part, Horner felt that he had too little prep time for "Aliens."

Clearly, they made up.
