FF XIII to be released on the 360!

I'm not bothered about FFXIII going multi-format. I'm still planning to buy the PS3 version, because that's the system the game was originally designed for and should therefore be the best version.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. We don't know how long the 360 version has been in development, and I'm willing to be Squeenix aren't going to fire out a sloppy port.

Apart from the 360 version being multi disc (we assume) I doubt there'll be much difference between the two.

Valkyrie Profile?

No, he's thinking of Eternal Sonata- which after some doubt has been recently confirmed to be coming to the west.

It's been out in the UK for ages.

It'd help if you read the posts that were being quoted to obtain some context. We were discussing the PS3 version, which has not been released in the West at all.

My apologies. I only skimmed the thread.

The 360 version hasn't started development yet, and it won't until development on the PS3 version is done in Japan, after this Squeenix will start the long arduous task of localising. During this time, development on the 360 version will be completed, ready to be launched alongside it's PS3 counterpart in the west.

I also don't think there will be much of a discernible difference between the two versions, Square Enix are pretty technically adept.

Lastly, I'd be surprised if FFXIII remains exclusive much longer, same engine.

Ah right, that makes alot of sense. Thanks for the info.

Cant really blame them, if i were a game Dev i would certainly want my games to sell as many copies as possible, and a mutiplatform release is the way to do it, and with the upcoming update to allow 360 games to be installed onto the 360 HD it looks like they have negated the who getting up and changing the disc issue that will come with games on multiple discs.

It's not like you have to generally change the discs over and over. I don't think that's ever been much of an issue with RPG's.

I meant more along he lines of racing games and the likes not being confined to that one DVD9, now game Dev's can push the boat out and add that second disc, although it will be interesting too see just how this affects people who are sitting with a 360 without a HD, will we see games on multiple discs that require a HD as mandatory before they run.....but one of the biggest upsides of installing you game onto the 360 HD is that we no longer have to listen to that bloody noisy 360 DVD spinning.....;)

Should be interesting.

No, iirc the `white engine' used for FFXIII is not platform-specific.

It will likely be identical on both machines. :)

The fact that the White Engine (which they renamed the 'Crystal Tools' engine a few months back) is multi-platform does not necessarily mean that the 360 version will be the same/worse/better than the PS3 version.

Unreal Engine 3 is also multiplatform, and there've been dozens of examples this generation of where a UE3 game first developed on 360 then ported to PS3 has suffered.

Square-Enix are better than buffoons like Ubisoft, of course, but it's not unreasonable at this stage to accept the possibility that the 360 version will be inferior.

The problem happens when a dev optimizes for one platform first, then takes that code and tries to shoehorn that to the other platform. It's why there are developers who just do ports now, since they have the time to do that work that an internal studio probably doesn't want to do. Mass Effect is the first example that comes to mind, where a port house did the PC version because all the ME guys were transfered to other projects after the game shipped.

I suppose those companies are like the people who translate Harry Potter into French and Chinese. You could probably just run the book through a translator and release it... but if you want something that's more than just readable, you probably need someone to take the plot and just do a rewrite.

As for FF13 itself, it just depends on how forward thinking they were. If they were like id and made their tools with the intention of being able to port to each platform right from the beginning, both games might be compromised but they would be optimized enough to run well. It's sort of like Capcom with SF4... where it's a PC game that's easily ported to the consoles and arcade hardware.

Apparently SquareEnix will make another big announcement soon...
Nothing to do with FFXIII, probably something about FFVII...

The only thing I want from FFVII now is a PS3 remake. It was cruel of them to make that fake demo a couple of years back and not be doing a remake.

This one?!?

I agree...

Oh man I REALLY hope they're remaking 7. I've read all about it and found the story to be the most interesting in an RPG, but have never played it. Particularly if it will look like 13/Advent Children!

Yeah, and the fact that the PC version of ME is better then the 360 version really shows how it's a problem.

Oh wait...

It's totally unreasonable at this point to assume anything about the quality of the 360 version of FFXIII. Good, bad, whatever.

I don't think the idea of a FF7 remake had ever really been off the table. IIRC - though my only source is a fairly reliable print magazine from the day - Square went as far as confirming its existance during the early (possibly pre-launch) days of the PS2. Then it just disappeared and showed up again at E3 05 as a PS3 tech demo.

So I dunno. I reckon we'll see a remake one day - maybe not this generation, but certainly the next.

I think that was my point though. These port houses specialize in code optimization and short turnaround time. I imagine that they got the code base probably near the time that ME actually went gold. Then they went in and changed the UI and the lock picking minigame. It still took them half a year to do it though, which I imagine is still a pretty decent turnaround time for port work.

But, then there's the other thing of the fact that if your PC port runs like shit, you already have bad coders since everything is done on the PC in the first place.
People are confused at the prospect of a PC version of Street Fighter 4, but they were demoing the initial game on PCs with Hori sticks attached to it... so, I'm sure it's just a matter of putting the code on plastic and selling it along the other versions.

Again, the quality of the 360 version of FF13 will depend entirely on the versatility of their coders and their engine.

Bettenhausen was hinting at some kind of major FF7/Advent Children related announcement coming in the next few weeks and said that it would be related to the PS3.
