Federation Class I Dreadnought

Hi all. This has been posted elsewhere, but I thought I'd show it off around these here parts.

For the young'uns around here this is the famous Federation class dreadnought by Franz Joseph. First presented in the Star Fleet Technical Manual. Never seen on screen as other than a drawing (a lot of the TM stuff found its way into background displays) but the dreadnought Entente, NCC-2120 was called at the beginning of Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Modeled in Blender. Textured in GIMP.

I wanted something to show that this was the last and most powerful version of the old TOS / FJ nacelles before TMP. Blue seemed a good way to go.

I'm glad you stayed true the the "original", ie: the top side of the saucer mirroring the under side.

I'd always planned to do this with some AMT TOS Enterprises, which I do have enough of.

I've always wondered, is the saucer the same size or larger than on a Constitution class?

Actually I added in an undercut on the bottom of the saucer like the Constitution has. If you look at the profile in the plan you can see that it's not QUITE what FJ originally drew. It's the one place where I really went "off book". Otherwise I followed his TM drawing as closely as I could, taking detail references from his Constitution and extrapolating as appropriate.

The most interesting thing about this for me is that I followed FJ's color scheme: http://www.trekplace.com/fj-gallery-colorguide.html I thought it would look terrible (lots of silver and black in unusual places). Turns out, I love it.

No idea on the size comparison. But I suppose I could check quickly enough...

I still have my original FJ Tech Manual from when I bought it in '75. I don't believe in following it as faithfully as some fans do, but I must tell you that you did a really fine job bringing the "dreadnought" to life.

Nice work. Real nice job on the translucent stuff, that's always some of the hardest material to get looking right. Nacelle caps are a nice touch in that colour, it does indeed make it look somewhat more like a slightly different technology.

It's a superb model of a bloody awful looking design though. A lot of the FJ stuff is heavy handed cut & paste, unfortunately. He may have been one of the first, but he was far from being the best.

I would love to see someone bring Forbin's Minmus to life in 3D CGI, only replace those megaphasers with little pods that each have a small dish on the front-end.

Honestly, the only time the Federation looks unbearably awful to me is when people just assume it's a total cut and paste. The DN's parts are almost all custom, except for the nacelles.

I mean, the only issue I have with it is how the hell the third nacelle is supposed to "balance" with the other two, just going by Jefferies' own aircraft-translated-to-starship logic. Of course, there are single engine, twin AND tri-engined planes, so what is even the hell, right?

I've not gone through your rendering with a fine-toothed comb, but at a first inspection it looks excellent. One comment though, is that the color of the so-called main sensors (fore and aft) is very dark on my monitor, which makes them almost invisible. I'd consider making them the brighter red of most of TOS (IIRC, originally the TOS dish was a darker shade than it was later on).

Oh yeah, I knew I still had work to do. I actually created a setup where I can create maps for the other registries somewhat painlessly.
