Do some people in the media honestly believe Farve will come back and play again or ae they just babbling on about it in order to have somethingto talk about?
Good for Sapp. I heard he wrote a big "I'm Done" on his blog at the end of the season. So his announcement was just to make it official. The conjecture was more solid before the press conference, but we've seen press conferences before. Troy Aikman mentioned that he very nearly came back after swearing he was done, but the team he was talking to changed it's mind. I don't think Favre will come back, but I would hardly be shocked if he changed his mind when he got closer to the season.
As for having something to talk about - hell, they've been spending entire 3-4 hour shows talking about Favre's career, place in history, etc. They don't need to talk about him coming back when they can just drone on and on about his career for days on end. I think I've heard or read about 40 different conversations/columns about the greatest QBs ever in the last few days. Same conversation that came up several times already in the last year (especially when speculating about Favre's future).
I hope he stays retired just so we don't have to go through another round of "This may be Favre's last MNF game," "This may be Favre's last home game," "Is Favre one of the greatest?" questions again.
In regards to Sapp, he was on PTI and mentioned that he retired the same day because he liked the attention going elsewhere. He was very happy to have a quiet retirement announcement. He didn't consider it a bad thing at all.
