Too Much Fun

I started a similar thread in the "Star Trek" forum. I want to know which villain people liked most (individuals, duos, and trios, not entire races) in each of the three series. For the case of TNG, I included movie villains since they didn't have as many villains as the original series. In hindsight I probably should have included people likeKruge and General Chang in the other poll, but there were just too many choices on the poll already without getting them involved.

My personal pick would be Q. I enjoyed every Q Star Trek appearance, even his Voyager ones (despite my disdain for the series), and "Deja Q" is one of my favourite episodes. I don't think any other villain in Star Trek had as fascinating a relationship as Q had with Picard, the way Picard passionately despised him and yet sometimes found himself begrudgingly admitting some appreciation for him, while Q derived immense pleasure from mocking Picard and dismissing him as part of race that was benath the Q, yet couldn't help but feel some respect, admiration, and affection for the good captain. His interactions with Janeway, Vash, and (briefly) Sisko were tremendously entertaining to me as well.

I tried to look over all the episode summaries for all the seasons so I didn't forget any villains, but since I can't remember much of seasons 1 and 7, there might be some names forgotten that people make by disappointed by. Sorry for any you feel may be overlooked. Please feel free to suggest ones you think I shouldn't have left out and have fun! The DS9 poll is on the way!

I voted for Gul Madred as the most memorable (besides Q) of those listed. I don't think we ever had a truly epic villain though in any of the Trek series.

Q, although Gul Madred was pretty strong.

Most of these villains are barely 'villains' at all. Or at least they weren't very threatening. I think you should have put 'The Borg' in there as well, since they would qualify.

Agreed, Gul Madred was a bitter man who used torture as a means of punishment but also maintained a cultural veneer along with a sense of duty with made him so compelling in CoC.

And there has been one very epic villain in trek. Gul Dukat.

I'm going to have to go for Gul Madred, too - most of the others just aren't villainous enough, but goodness knows he had enough and to spare!

I love Q...but he's not a villain. I rather enjoy the Duras sisters, which I realize makes me an oddity, but I found them to be mostly comic relief. And the Borg were way scarier before they had a queen.

I picked Q, although I was torn between him, Kivas Fajo and Gul Madred. Each has his own special brand of villainy. I even wavered for a moment at Ardra, partly because I'm so hot for her! But Q is Picard's true arch-enemy, as he is the total opposite of Picard -- irresponsible, amoral, and incapable of taking much seriously. -- RR

I never got any sense that Q was a bad guy. Gul Madred was the most evil for me because (like most of his race we've seen) he was allowed to have a more developed personality than most guest characters on TNG. His evil is the most.. human...

The Borg Collective. Scariest villian ever. Try as they might no other group has captured the imagination of as many people as the Borg.

I voted for Q.

But looking at this list, I realize that TNG had more villains that I realized. My top five:

1. Q
2. The Borg Queen
3. Gul Madred
4. Lore
5. House of Duras

I also liked Moriarty, Tomalak (didn't get to see enough of him though)

Wow, looking at that list, it's incredible how few great villains there were on TNG. I suppose at its best, the show was more about ideas than bad guys.

As much as I liked Tomalak, he only made effectively a few cameo appearances. Gul Madred was the best by some way - well written, and played to perfection by David Warner. Those scenes with Stewart in Chain of Command are some of the very best on the series.

Honourable mention to Q - memorable, and John de Lancie always made the most out of some often terrible material. With a lesser actor, Q would have been awful.

Q as an individual. The Borg collectively (no pun intended!) When they first arrived the Borg were a new and different threat and very scary. Q has some great lines and JdL gives great delivery. Like all villains, though, they lost their bite, but in their heyday, I thought they were great.

Agreed :) Q would be my 'favourite character' on the above list but I really felt by the end of 'all Good Things' that he wasn't a bad guy at all, and certainly later on in Voyager he really didn't seem too bad, though by the end he annoyed me.

I voted for the Duras Sisters. I'm female and if I was going to ever be a real villain I'd want to be like them ;)

I also think 'Q' is my fave. I just watched, 'Devils Duel' and the lady who plays Ardra was really good. That story is excellent and the acting between Patrick and that lady drew me into the story!

*Shudder* I'd forgotten who Ardra was, that episode terrified me! Very well written indeed, but I didn't like her at all!
