Favourite Star Trek fact... that is not true.

Though I don’t think it was ever described as paradise in TOS.
"There was persecution on Earth once. I remember reading about it in my history class."
"Yes, but it happened way back in the twentieth century. There's no such primitive thinking today." - Chekov and Sulu, in "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield"

The writers might not have used the words utopia or paradise on that show, but it's obvious that's often what they were trying to convey.

Obvious to those who are looking for it.

"Leave any bigotry in your quarters. There is no place for it on the bridge."

Same series.

"There was legal, chattel slavery in the USA, Canada, South America and Western Europe once. I remember reading about it in my history class and watching documentaries on T.V"

"Yes, but it happened way back in the 19th century. There are no such primitive laws today"
Conclusion the Americas are now a place of paradise

True. But there was a great deal of persecution in every civilized society throughout history, and many of the non-civilized societies. Chattel slavery was one of the kinds of persecution, that appeared and stuck around for centuries. If we eliminate persecution and also have a world of great wealth and health -- indeed, many worlds with great wealth, health, and no persecution -- that would be a utopia compared to the world we've always known.

Turnabout Intruder is just a bad, bad episode. I take Lester's comment at face value. TOS was always pretty sexist (a product of its time), and that episode is about as bad as it gets. Shatner's acting makes it so much worse.
I thought it was quite interesting, I'd place it in about the middle of the pack among TOS episodes.
Well, her actions did involve trying to be a starship captain by impersonating a male, a rather difficult route.
Which makes Lester statement more believable. With only a few exceptions, we saw women top out at the rank of lieutenant.

I guess there are arguments for Kirk dumping her for his Starfleet career, but the dialog really makes it look like Lester hates being a woman and can't be a Starfleet captain of a perceived glass ceiling.

Especially when she tries to take over the ship to become captain. When she fails, she throws a tantrum saying "now I'll never get to be the captain!!"

And then later Kirk delivers the Emmy award of near-sexist statements with, "her life could have been as rich as any woman's....if only".

This episode goes down as the most, unintentionally funny Trek episode of all time. The acting, dialog, the outbursts, it's a classic bizarro episode.

And as an extension, it's Earth that was consistently described as a paradise, not the entirety of Federation space. It's common enough in criticism of the newer shows that I felt the need to point it out.

Earth is Disneyland, or Times Square in the late '90s. Whenever you lose your job or your wife kicks you out, and you get just a little too habitual with the snakeweed, the robot police kindly escort you to Mars.

Crime never happens in the same way that Japan has a 99% conviction rate. Something is not right.
