Favourite Class of Ship

Constitution Refit (1701-A)
Constitution (1701)
Ambassador (1701-C)

I never really liked the Galaxy class. Something about the nacelle design looks like a pontoon. No "rear propulsion port" suggestion of any kind. And I just don't like the primary hull port-starboard oriented oval, instead of fore/aft (as on Voyager).

No. It was not, and in the 79 episodes of TOS there's zero reference to what you're claiming. A true STARSHIP CLASS vessel is what the Enterprise was in TOS, the plaque on the bridge speaks for itself.

My opinion #mepersonally

Starship Class or Starship had the same meaning in the 23rd Century as "Ship of the Line" did in the 17th and 18th Centuries. By the TMP era and beyond, technology had advanced enough that even the simplest civilian ship could be considered a starship. Or, maybe not. Maybe a runabout or the Raven were never starships. Maybe freighters aren't, either. Perhaps starship refers to only Starfleet military craft and a merchant marine craft like the Beagle aren't starships. "By configuration, a starship" or Starship Class may still refer to a ship of specific size and power, but includes frigates, scouts, etc..

We had a nice discussion about this a few years ago.

The studio can brand the word "Starship" like phasers and tricorders and warp speed all they like and trademarking it keeps it secure to what belongs to them. I won't be turned to believe what was posted on the bridge of TOS Enterprise to be a mistake because the plaque could've been changed by the art dept at anytime during its run. That kind of branding wasn't necessary for the time, the survival of the series was. I wish a progression of the name was done than forcefully titling TOS Enterprise a Constitution Class retroactively. As we know any advancement in technology machines and tech get smaller and simplified.

By the time of TMP, I wouldn't give much credence for advancement when it came to technology, in TOS the engine room didn't require hazmat, radiation suits or have warp malfunctions producing wormholes, and the functions like defense was separated in it's own sections, and medical tricorders can not even identify the Klingon anatomy (TUC)*. TOS was far more advanced in simplifying ship operations which is what space explorers want for extended missions in space, but by the time of TMP everything appeared more complicated, bigger and clunky than advanced. For me, those over complications of functions gave me the impression after TOS run between TMP there was some sort of galactic technological collapse.

*Yes, I am aware there were malfunctions of the transporters in TOS but was resolved quite efficiently and practical.

Man, not much love herE for Excelsior.

Am I the only one here who was 7 in 1984?

1. Original constitution class (Enterprise)
2. Freedom class (Franklin)
3. Newton type (Newton, 'half moon' saucer section)
4. Sovereign class (Enterprise-E)
5. Crossfield class (Discovery)

1. Akira
2. The REAL Ambassador, not the hastily-thrown-together-at-the-last-minute hack job we actually saw
3. Steamrunner
4. Constitution (DSC)
5. Saber

Honorable mention: Wells (USS Relativity)
I wonder in the Ambassador class seen in TNG is a refit, if that is the true version?

Top 5 ships:

Defiant class
Galaxy class
Vorcha class
D’Deridex class
Sovereign class

Honourable mention: Constitution class (DIS)

Probert's original concept for the Ambassador class, as realised by Tobias Richter. My favourite starship design ever. Never mind the Enterprise-C, I wish the Enterprise-D had looked like this.

latest

  1. Steamrunner
  2. Nebula
  3. Miranda
  4. Luna
  5. Excelsior (either variant)
Of the non-Federation designs, an honorable mention for the Vulcan Suurok.
