That would open the floodgates to: Garrett, Harriman, Keogh, Benteen, Rixx, Esteban, and so on and so forth.

Does actually make me wonder just how many Starfleet Captain's we've actually seen on screen...hmmm...

Captain Robau, Hernandez, Spock, Riker, Jelico, La Forge (Geordi and his mom), Pressman.

So many cool Capts.

The two Deckers.

I don't have one but if you forced it out of me I would have to say....

Sisko and Janeway.

Can't choose and you can't make me. :)

Pike.

"The Cage" was true Star Trek. Everything after that was a watered down version.

I love both Kirk and Picard. I dig everything about them, but I had to vote for Picard.

Pike was a close third.

6. Christopher who? Come on, The Cage wasn't even released until the 80's. It's barely canon; at most it's like a bonus backstory prequel episode event thingy.

Christopher PIKE, the captain with the first woman XO and who's female crew members wore pants and not Nancy Sinatra outfits.

And without who's "bonus backstory prequel episode" to sell it there would be no series!

Picard.

Janeway was second for me, thought she had a ruthless streak that non of the other captains even came close to. Kirk takes third.

Also his episode was aired (albeit in a roundaout manner) in the original 1960s run of TOS, thanks to Talosian interference :)

I do wish we'd seen a Trek series based on the adventures of Pike and Number One, think it would've been great to have watched!

I'd vote but that'd be unfair. It used to be that I wouldn't vote for Kirk at all, but after watching TOS again I've changed my mind.

Technically I prefer Picard as a Captain, but Janeway is awesome in a completely different way a way which I admire equally.

Each Captain brings something new to the table. They do things in different ways for different reasons.

Instead I'm going in a different direction. Which Captain would I most like to serve under.

Kirk - Not a chance hot-headed and takes far too many risks for me.
Janeway - While she's probably the best, I would absolutely not like to serve under her. I don't like the way she uses her authority.
Picard - Great to watch, but serving under him, to his strict requirements? No way.
Sisko - Sisko is my kind of Captain. Sure he's not technically the best Captain, he doesn't take the risks that Kirk does and he's generally reserved as a Captain (than Janeway). Yet far more familiar and easier to approach than Picard.

I'm not going to get into Christopher Pike, the Pilot show was terrible, the acting was dodgy (for good reason) and I don't think he made a good Captain, worse than Kirk for sure.

Personally, I find Kirk easier and more fun to write, since, by his own admission, he's more inclined to rush in where angels fear to tread.

With the later captains, it can sometimes be a struggle to find excuses to get them into the thick of the action, instead of just sitting in a chair, issuing orders. But you can always count on Kirk to be in the forefront of whatever's going on.

There's a dangerous situation on Delta Vega Omega III? Kirk isn't going to delegate the job to an "away team." He's going to beam right down and deal with it himself. :)

Interesting that current vote results indicate that the captains are ranked exactly according to the production order of the shows...

(Well, except for Pike, that is. But I don't think we can really compare him with the other Captains, as we have seen only so little of him).

That's why I like to read more of him (in Child of Two Worlds for instance). At least there are some novels featuring Pike and they are more intersting than I thought it would be possible. :)

That's precisely what I love about Kirk. He's an enduring action hero as much as he is a great captain. I could never imagine any of the other captains being in the thick of the action the way Kirk was.

It's easy to vote for 'favourite captain' -- then you are free to make a personal choice based on whatever factors you'd like. It's a lot harder to vote for 'best captain', because it begs the question what role a starfleet captain is supposed to fill, exactly. Is he supposed to be an action hero? A diplomat? Something of both, and if so, how much of each? Did Kirk's era ask for Kirk-like captains and Picard's era for Picard-like captains, so that each was 'best' for his time? Idunno ....

Thanks for the shout-out. Hope you like the book!

Picard - Possibly my favorite character of all time, I wish there were more people like him in real life.
Archer - Probably not a very popular opinion. I enjoyed the fact that he seemed like a real person and I loved his curiosity for exploration.

Of the series leads:

1. Picard: Someone once said that Picard best embodied the ideals of the Federation among the captains (this was the 90s) but I still thinks that applies. He's a man of science, diplomacy, and action (but usually as a last resort). I also enjoyed the TNG crew the most. I have a nostalgic attachment to them and TNG, despite my misgivings at the no interpersonal conflict edict on TNG.
2. Kirk: Bold and charismatic, he was an inspiring leader. I mean who else could inspire his crew to break the law to go to the Genesis Planet and beyond?
3. Sisko: I liked Sisko's humanity, his toughness but also his vulnerability. And I liked how he was family man; really the only captain that had a relatively stable family life. Arguably the greatest warrior among the captains, though Kirk is also up there as well.
4. Janeway: During Voyager's run I never really got Janeway. She seemed way too inconsistent for me. But over the years I've come to respect Mulgrew's performance more. Still not a big fan, but looking at what faced Janeway, she got almost everyone home so I will give her that.
5. Archer: The weakest captain for me. I didn't start to get into the character into Season 3. I think he improved as a character an leader in the show's final two seasons, but still didn't quite come together for me. I still don't think his accolades were earned, more a deal of telling and not enough showing.

Of the guests, ones that stood out to me:
-Geordi LaForge: One of my favorite parts of "Timeless". I wish they would make it canon.
-Silva LaForge: I always liked Madge Sinclair so it was great seeing her again. I wish we had gotten a novel or comic (one of the Captain's Tables perhaps) giving us one of her adventures.
-Sulu: Really liked seeing him in "Undiscovered Country" and wished he had gotten his own series or a miniseries. It's cool that we've got some novels and comics though.
-Jellico: I liked how he was a hard ass. And he was right on Troi having a uniform. And his suspicions about the Cardassians were correct, though his approach was a bit too cavalier.
-NuPike: Just had the gravitas. Someone I wouldn't mind watching in his own movie or series.
-Original Pike: I like NuPike more, but I would've liked to have seen more of the original Pike. He seemed a bit more morose figure and might not have been as fun as Kirk but still I was intrigued by "The Cage".
-Garrett: Brief glimpse at a cool character in "Yesterday's Enterprise".
-Ransom: I really liked "Equinox" and how that crew was kind of a dark mirror of Voyager.
-Robau: More so for the visual than from what I actually saw in action. He just looked like he might have been a bad ass, and I would've liked to have seen him and George Kirk and crew on more adventures. Get on it Trek comics.
-Terrell: It was neat seeing him in "Wrath of Khan" and seeing him pop up in comics.
-Scott: I wish they had revisited Tryla Scott at some point after "Conspiracy". I liked the idea of her becoming the youngest captain in Starfleet.
-Hernandez: I liked her on Enterprise. I liked her relationship with Archer. Unfortunately the series was canceled and I can assume we would've seen more of her in later seasons. At least Trek Lit. picked up her story and gave her closure.

From Trek Lit.
-Calhoun: I really loved New Frontier when it started though I've lost interest over the years. That being said, Calhoun was a breath of fresh air, a bold, funny, charismatic, and kick ass character.
-Harriman: Yes, he's a canon character, but I've liked him better in the novels and comics. Also in the fan film "Of Gods and Men."
-Wong: Also, she's a canon character, but I liked her in the comic one-shot.
