Sisko. He is still the most human of them, to me. He's the kinda guy I'd follow, but also just hang around with. A man willing to admit he's flawed, but still tries to do always do his best.

And knows what the bloodwine is for. ;)

Picard, no contest.
Kirk was a cowboy.

Kirk wasn't any more of a cowboy than Picard was. Throughout the original series, Kirk was more often than not a strict by-the-book type of guy. Sure, Kirk sometimes interpreted regulations in a "unique" manner in order to solve the problem of the week but every captain (Picard included) has done the same. The only incident I can think of where Kirk flat-out said "screw the rules" was Star Trek III.

He kept getting into topless fist fights. That's enough for me to prefer Picard. :p

Picard gets my vote. He learned from experience and got better as he went along. Followed by Janeway. She wasn't perfect, but she was a decent captain.

1. Picard = Best Captain
2. Archer = My #1 pick to serve under (that's right, bring the hate!)
3. Janeway = My #2 pick to serve under.
4. Kirk = Classic ball breaker and ass taker.
5. Sisco = um, Baseball?
6. Christopher who? Come on, The Cage wasn't even released until the 80's. It's barely canon; at most it's like a bonus backstory prequel episode event thingy. Might as well put Neil Armstrong on the list.

I think Sisko is cool (and so is NuPike), but have to pick Archer, the guy who went out there without a starfleet to back him up.

Some would use the same evidence to make the opposite argument. ;)

Kirk (real, TOS Kirk) is my favorite by far. But if we're asking best captain, I'm giving it to Janeway. Considering the pure nightmare situation she had to deal with, I'd say she endured the most crap and threaded the tiniest needles and still got her crew home (sort of).

I had TNG on the other day and my five year old son made it clear he hated it. I asked why and he said: "Because there's no fights and nobody goes outside!"

At least I know what series to show him now. :D

The ultimate nightmare of a question to me.

For me, it is a toss-up between Picard/Janeway/Sisko.

I am going to go with Janeway...I think. It is so difficult.

Here is my reasoning:

1. Kirk: Brave, intelligent, charismatic...yet I find him...somewhat...odd. Too often for me he ends episodes giggling at some Spock/McCoy banter after umpteen members of his crew have been gunned down [Picard is always visibly upset at any losses]. Also, Kirk seems overly obsessed with his ship. He really is in a relationship with it. I do love him but sometimes I don't really like him if that makes sense.

2. Archer: To me, 'A Night in Sickbay' is the worst episode of Trek. I'd have reported him to Command after it. He is good...but seems so able to go to pieces as soon as situations become tense.

3. Sisko: Awesome. He is bold, determined and yet quite humble and approachable. Everyone respects him but nobody is scared of him.

4. Janeway: For me, the most impressive of all the captains. She deals with a horrendously bad situation as well as she can. Her imperfections and clear making-it-up-as-she-goes-along style just endears her to me. As I have posted before, I think she is RIGHT in Equinox & Tuvix. She really does deal with very awkward scenarios. Additionally, I find her very likable, very funny and intelligent.

5. Picard: Better than Kirk [yes I said it]. The philosophiser, the moraliser. He seems to wise, you would trust his advice on anything. What actually relegates him to a joint 2nd with Sisko for me is the movies. The gun-toting midlife crisis captain he becomes puts me off of him. Almost as if Picard himself has been so repressed for so many years that he has to drive dune buggies, fire tommy guns etc. He has quotes that could be carved in stone but he just narrowly loses to Janeway for me.

Bringing this back, because it's amusing.

Normally I'd vote Picard, but the big Kirk, James T has been my favorite for a few months now. Rewatch of TOS will do that.

I'm still confused. The thread title says favorite captain but the poll says best captain. The two are not the same. Not for me anyway. Kirk is my favorite captain because I simply like his character the most. But if I had to choose the best and most professional captain, that's clearly Picard.

That is funny! But it leaves you wondering about some of the choices, specifically Banner and Black Widow. Mightn't they be better switched around?

I think it's ok. Widow I could see being a Neyrs-eske character in Star Trek.
Janeway, like Banner, was a scientist at heart.

The Sisko is an ass-whooper, ideal for the Black Widow :)
