Favourite Bond films

I just re-watched Casino Royale (for the millionth time) and regarding the torture scene. Wouldn't that destroy his balls? Turn them into bloodied mush? And yet a few weeks later he and Vesper are going at it like Jack rabbits? Doesn't make much sense, unless he had reconstructive surgery? Just a thought.

Though this is close contender for best Bond theme-that-never-was...

Interesting story... United Artists wanted the title of the movie to be included in the theme song lyrics.

So, when Tom Jones went to record the theme song that ended up in the movie, he had a hard time understanding what "he strikes like Thunderball" means.

He also fainted in the recording booth on the last line.

People love Dalton and if they didn't initially, they came around.

Dalton was before his time. His Bond is similar to Daniel Craig's.
It is, but Dalton's not a very good actor. Craig is.
Dalton needed to bring a bit of the charisma he put in his Neville Sinclair character in The Rocketeer. Not too much, just enough to make his Bond a bit more likeable without losing the harder edge he brought.

TMWTGG is a guilty pleasure of mine. Yes, it's cheesy as all getout, but Christopher Lee makes for a great villain, and it's also got great exotic locales.
Unfortunately, Lee doesn't appear in the film nearly enough, and the great villain and exotic locales are ruined by a midget henchman, the dumbest Bond Girl ever, and a f***ing slide whistle. :p

Evil Twin said:
Moonraker is pretty much a complete rehash of TSWLM. Just replace the sea with space. It's a weaker film, although it does feel a little more polished, production design and special effects wise.
And Michael Lonsdale does get some really good lines:

"You have arrived at a propitious moment, considered to be your country's one indisputable contribution to western civilization: Afternoon tea."
"Mr. Bond, you persist in defying my efforts to find an amusing death for you."
"James Bond. You appear with the tedious inevitability of an unloved season."

My ranking of the Bond films would be:

25. Casino Royale (1967)
24. A View To A Kill
23. Never Say Never Again
22. Quantum of Solace
21. Moonraker
20. Die Another Day
19. The Man With The Golden Gun
18. Diamonds Are Forever
17. Dr. No
16. Thunderball
15. Live And Let Die
14. Ocotpussy
13. Tomorrow Never Dies
12. The World is Not Enough
11. For Your Eyes Only
10. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
9. The Living Daylights
8. Skyfall
7. You Only Live Twice
6. From Russia With Love
5. License to Kill
4. The Spy Who Loved Me
3. Goldfinger
2. GoldenEye
1. Casino Royale

I won't get the chance to see Spectre till Friday. Hope it's good.

I'd query the notion that Dalton's not a good actor, he and Craig remain the best actors to take on the role. That doesn't mean they're movie stars, as in the kind of men who either do, or will essentially end up playing variations on the same character in every film they're in (Connery, Moore and Brosnan fall more into this category). Of course sometimes good actors just end up in that movie star persona, one thing I loved about Django was that it reminded me that Samual L Jackson can actually fucking act! But I digress :)

I think Dalton has a lot of charisma, certainly in TLD when he's allowed to play more of a romantic lead and he has some charming moments with Maryam D'Abo, and some snarky ones with Koskov, he just can't sell a double entendre the way Moore or Brosnan can!

Of all the things that I'd love to see re-mastered in the history of Bond, I think top of the list would be the remove that bloody slide whistle from TMWTGG! Last time I watched the film I actually rewound it and watched that bit again with the sound off  I disagree about Ekland and Nick Knack though, sure Goodnight isn't the sharpest tool in the box, in fact I do wonder if someone hadn't been watching a lot of Doctor Who at the time and decided to team Bond up with Jo Grant, but she is cute, and Ekland has more charisma and screen presence than a lot of more forgettable Bond girls. Not one of the best but nowhere near the worst.

And Nick Knack's just great, Lee and Villechaize make for a great double act. IMO of course.

Lee and Villechaize were fun together, but Bond fighting a midget (and he doesn't defeat him so much as stuff him in a suitcase) really underscores how much of a joke Moore's tenure was. It's right below the clown suit in Octopussy on my list of cringeworthy moments.

On the whole, I like all the films or can find something in each that I appreciate. Die Another Day for example is very far toward the bottom of my list as one of the worst films in the series, but the stuff in Cuba, starting with the jazzy trumpet-heavy score while 007 is cruising through the island has always been fun to me. Similarly, while there are many, many things I absolutely love about Skyfall, I also have serious issues with how rape-y it is and some of the other plot contrivances that don't hold up under heavy scrutiny. Oh well.

If I had to list my favorites, I'd go with the following:

Dr.No
From Russia With Love
Goldfinger
Thunderball
The Spy Who Loved Me
For Your Eyes Only
The Living Daylights
Licence to Kill
GoldenEye
The World Is Not Enough
Casino Royale
(2006)
Skyfall

I have not seen Spectre yet, so I cannot comment on it.

There were some things I really enjoyed about Skyfall: Javier Bardem as the villain and visiting Bond's childhood home. But I felt the story didn't flow very well.

Anything with Connery (except Never Say Never Again. That's a lowlight.)

Casino Royale
Skyfall
Tomorrow Never Dies
Moonraker

From Russia With Love
Goldfinger
Thunderball
Diamonds Are Forever
The Spy Who Loved Me
Moonraker
Octopussy
A View To A Kill
The Lving Daylights
Goldeneye
Tomorrow Never Dies
Die Another Day
Casino Royale
Skyfall
Spectre

On Her Majesty's Secret Service. By a considerable distance.

Goldfinger, From Russia With Love, You Only Live Twice, The Living Daylights, Goldeneye and Thunderball are among the following group.

^ I'm actually glad they didn't do that. It would have been kind of a cheap gimmick, IMHO.

Unless Connery had been the one to approach THEM about a role, in which case I wouldn't have minded, but IIRC they asked him and he turned them down.

They very briefly considered it early in pre-production:

Interviewer: You brought back a lot of nostalgia. There's a scene in Scotland with Albert Finney. Was there any thought of approaching Sean Connery for that role?

Sam Mendes: There was a definite discussion about that -- way, way early on. But I think that's problematic. Because, to me, it becomes too ... it would take you out of the movie. Connery is Bond and he's not going to come back as another character. It's like, he's been there. So, it was a very brief flirtation with that thought, but it was never going to happen, because I thought it would distract.

^ thanks. I suspect even if they had agreed Connery would have probably refused given he's retired.
