Favorite Types of Ending

What is your favorite type of ending? A sad one? A happy one? An ending with closure? An ending without closure? Take your pick? It could be the ending of a movie, a TV show, or a book.

It depends on the movie of course, but I like endings with a lot of emotion, whether it be happy or not.

The best ending that comes to mind right now is One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest. Jesus, that's powerful stuff.

E.T.'s ending is also great.

I like it when someone is walking out into the distance and then the screen fades to black. It could be either the hero, the villain, or someone who wasn't either...

Twist endings!

I love a good Twilight Zone. And I still love The 6th Sense.

Overall, probably my general favorite.

Have to say, some of the very best movies were along these lines. Cuckoo's Nest, Garp, Shawshank Redemption- all great.

I never cared for endings like The Graduate. Although unfulfilled endings can be cool. Butch Cassidy, Reservoir Dogs, very interesting...

I like whatever ending is suitable to the show in question. Babylon 5 couldn't have been done any other way than sad and thoughtful. Farscape's ending brought closure and ended on a high note. Jericho's ending implied history was in the making ...

What I don't like are stupid endings (e.g. Stargate SG-1) or tacked on endings like Voyager. An ending needs to feel appropriate and planned out.

I like endings that make sense or endings that keep you thinking about it for weeks. What I hate are endings that make you feel like you wasted time watching the movie or endings that are depressing.

Good endings. I know that sounds like a cop-out but some fiction needs a twist ending while others need a bleak ending etc.

If it's a laugh out loud comedy then the ending should be happy. The ending needs to be earned and reflect what has gone on before both plotwise and tone.

I twist ending but with happy closure. I hate endings where all of a sudden one of the main characters die. If you ever seen umm... "A perfect getaway". That is a unique film with an orignal ending.
