I listen to a lot of soundtracks while I work, and Star Trek is almost always in the mix. There's a wide variety in I-X, with Jerry Goldsmith obviously the most widely scored... But with an interesting variety of his own.

So, my main question - what's your favorite soundtrack, and why? Any you don't like?

The only problem I have with the soundtracks is that they're actually reasonably difficult to find - I bought some of the limited releases of the expanded II and III but if I ripped them to digital format, it's on a hard drive gathering dust somewhere while I don't have a CD drive handy to rip them again. I was looking on one streaming service for TMP and it ambitiously puts the release date of the set some time in the 2030's. There must be some wild rights issues going on, but if you're streaming often you're left with knock off "City of Prague Does X" or else you can take a look in dodgy sources.

For me, my notes on the films that stand out...
  • TMP - The granddaddy, really. One of the advantages of TMP being such an OTT budget movie was they got Goldsmith and defining motifs that would be with us all the way through the rest of Star Trek up to the end of the TNG era movies. It stands apart though as a score - the mystical voyage through V'Ger, the romance, there's a lot of very unique elements
  • TWOK & TSFS - What starts as "We couldn't afford Jerry" gave us another very defining Star Trek duo from James Horner. Blow that horn, baby. Battle->Countdown is a good 15 minutes of your life and Stealing the Enterprise is a lot of fun. If you get the expanded soundtracks, there's some amazing bonus tracks from the original release - Enterprise Attacks Reliant and Genesis Destruction come to mind.
  • TVH and TUC (IV & VI) are two outliers, with different composers... I could take them or leave them on a given day. IV is very upbeat but also a bit more generic "fun 80's movie" in my opinion, and VI has a bit too much chanting for my liking, but very personal that opinion
  • TFF brings back JG and the soundtrack is honestly the best thing about the movie - A bit less original maybe than TMP but a swashbuckling action movie with the trek elements returning from TMP... Life is a Dream set the stage for the ending of all the movies past First Contact
  • Generations is a really interesting original by a one-shot movie composer with obviously a deep pedigree on TNG itself, Dennis McCarthy. Like VI it has a choir, but it's a lot less chanting and a lot more ethereal, and I like it. I always think of Generations as a Christmas movie (it was released in mid-November and obviously has the Nexus Christmas Carol storyline) and the soundtrack fits
  • FC, INS & NEM... The latter two, the soundtrack is the best thing about the movies IMO and for FC it really matches the whole tone and tenor of the movie. Some originalish stuff, never quite as good as TMP and TFF, but to be fair they came at the tail of Goldsmith's long career and life
If only they were all more easily accessible!

Here's how it breaks down for me:
  • TMP is the overall best.
  • TVH is the most purely enjoyable (for me, I know it's not everyone's favorite)
  • TUC has a really cool "Eastern bloc" feel that's unlike any other Star Trek score
  • TWOK and TSFS are really great and fun.
  • The TFF soundtrack is good, but kind of derivative.
  • Generations sounds like someone gave a TV composer a bigger orchestra and a choir.
  • First Contact has always disappointed me. Jerry Goldsmith basically just dusted off his existing Star Trek themes and added that lazy 4-note Borg motif that I'm pretty sure I first heard in a He-Man toy commercial. Ron Jones' Borg theme was far superior.
  • The Insurrection score is just as exciting and groundbreaking as the movie.
  • I hate Nemesis so much that I've pretty much blocked everything associated with it out of my mind.

I love the subject of Star Trek movie soundtracks. I am a huge fan.

1. TMP- As subjective as taste in music and movies is....this is as close to "objectively the best" as a Trek soundtrack gets. It is an integrated part of the movie...it's almost impossible to think about the visuals in this film as a separate thing from the music. It may be Goldsmith's best work....and that's saying a lot.

2. TWOK/TSFS- Horner had some HUGE shoes to fill...and he could not have done it any better. I view these movies as virtually inseparable, and the soundtracks do a great job setting the tone and connecting them. I actually like the TSFS "Klingon" theme as much as I like Goldsmith's.

3. TFF- This is a fantastic soundtrack as well. It has great action/adventure themes...but also does a great job communicating the scope and wonder of the whole journey and the more intimate character moments. I love "The Mountain" as a unique and majestic piece of music.

Other Notes:

GEN surprises me, but for some reason I really like it. It has sort of a magical quality to it, and some really nice themes that make you wonder what "could have been" if they had done more in TNG. TUC and TVH are ok...but they were too different and off-beat for me to really love them. The FC soundtrack ranges from brilliant (especially the main theme) to jarringly generic. NEM was very much the same...I liked parts of it...but it was also fairly tired. INS is easily the worst of the bunch...

I believe all the OSTs are on Amazon and iTunes. The MP3/digital files at least. I previously bought them from Amazon over iTunes. Apple locks all of it's MP3 files bought from them. So you can only play them on Apple software. Amazon, you can play the files anywhere and they're not locked.

It's been years since I've sat down to listen to all the soundtracks. I used to listen to them while I drive. But I do remember the names of my favorite tracks. See the spoiler.
TWOK - Battle In The Mutara Nebula
TSFS - Bird of Prey Decloaks
TUC - Battle For Peace The Final Chance
FC - Retreat
FC - First Contact

Part 2
I must say, the album/poster art for the older movies is uniquely striking. I really miss this. ST09, STID and BEY are severely lacking. With the exception of BEY's recreation of TMP's poster art.

NEM - Lateral Run
NEM - Final Flight
ST09 - Enterprising Young Men
ST09 - Chutes and Matter

Agree with pretty much every word of this post.

^^this

1000%, that.

TMP. There is no comparison.

Agreed.

While I have enjoyed all of the film scores, TMP is the one that stands out to me as being the definitive music of Star Trek. Listening to it brings back great memories of seeing the movie for the very first time on December 23, 1979.

:techman:

TMP seems to currently be unavailable for download but for a single track. Don’t believe ST3 is easy to find, either. All of the other ones, esp ST2 are somewhere. I found ST6 on 7Digital but haven’t seen it anywhere else.

Favorite, meaning the one which out matches them all. I have to admit some of the movies had its pitfalls but the one thing that never missed a step were the soundtracks. If I had to choose, the one which gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it is from the late composer James Horner's Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. There's something about his music which geared me toward adventure; gosh, the soundtrack was literally the icing on the cake, pure tonal thrill.

I have a soft spot for the opening credits for Star Trek: First Contact. There's something... hopeful about it. And then we jump into Captain Picard's nightmares...

The Jerry Goldsmith openings for both FC and TFF are so majestic and beautiful....they are worthwhile pieces of music all on their own, even divorced from the Star Trek context.

I think the FC opening theme is intended to convey "hopefulness," as the movie is as much about the foundational point of "Star Trek" as it is about overcoming a Borg threat. It really pays off at the end when the Vulcans arrive and the Enterprise departs.

Beyond gave us our first Star Trek music video. Visuals and vocals are excellent.

Rihanna and Sia as some kind of siren Q/Celestial being, is a classic Trek experience.

I think this would have made for a decent bond theme.
