Favorite series finales?

Joe Washington

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
Which show endings do you rank the best?

Mine are Six Feet Under, the Shield, Babylon 5, and Farscape.

Off the top of my head, and in no particular order:

B5 "Sleeping in Light"
Angel "Not Fade Away"

I must also confess that I loved the last ep of Mortal Kombat: Conquest. The idea is similar to Angel's finale, but the scenario is reversed. I would love to get this show on DVD, if only to see the finale again.

B5 "Sleeping in Light" is one of the finest hours of television. It made me cry.

Though it's not sci-fi, the final episode of M*A*S*H was another amazing finale.

Angel's Not Fade Away is the best series finale I've ever seen. It's perfect, epic and so beautiful. Even the infamous "cliffhanger" was a perfect kinda-end (though has now been continued) that summed up what AtS and Angel were about (complete with that rainy alley imagery that was so much of the Angel character's history).

"Do you want me to lie to you now?"

(WESLEY!)

"Let's go to work."

-DS9: So parts of it aren't great, but absolutely love the final scene. Jake and Kira looking out the window was awesome!

-TNG: TNG is more solid in my opinion, and it too has a fabulous last scene. Sums up the series perfectly: The skies the limit.

-BSG: Again, not without it's problems, but the last scene (you know which one, not the flash-forward)
"It reminds me of you"
was bittersweet and gorgeous.

Angel: What away to capuslize the whole series in this one episode! "Let's get to work!"

Quantum Leap: I know many don't like it, but I really do. Even though Sam wants to go back home, he shows his selflessness and rights a friends wrong, and Sam continues to leap.

I have issues with anyone who ends their show on a cliffhanger. I'm a big fan of closure.

But off the top of my head:

-Farscape:Peacekeeper Wars(although the way the just kind of forgive Scorpy at the end is annoying)
-Star Trek TNG
-DS9(I know I'm in the minority)
-B5(despite the fact that that season never happened)
-Avatar:The Last Airbender(despite it's flaws. ZATARA 4 EVA!)
-Life on Mars UK
-Justice League Unlimited

Star Trek TNG: truly epic and a great tribute to the series, its history, and its characters. By far the best ending to a ST series.

Homicide: the last season of this excellent crime drama had been pretty lackluster, but I love how the ending TV movie brought all of the characters back - even, in the very last scene, the ones you really didn't expect.

BSG: obviously it divided opinion very strongly, but I loved it. Personally I thought the characters deserved a peaceful ending after all they'd been through, and the mystical aspects were fully in line with the series.

Cowboy Bebop: pretty depressing, but I really couldn't imagine a happy ending for Spike.

Kim Possible: put a huge smile on my face the whole way through, as well a few happy tears. GO RON!!!

Avatar: the epic ending we were all waiting for, while still keeping to the series strengths (small character moments, humour). The last scenes were very moving I thought.

Quantum Leap: I know many don't like it, but I really do. Even Sam wants to go back home, he shows his selflessness and rights a friends wrong, and Sam continues to leap.
Found most of the episode infuriatingly vague and silly, but the final scene was brilliant.

Least favourite ending was The X-Files, but that just maintained the stagnation that had set years previously, so at least its badness didn't come as an unpleasant shock.

Finales I liked (in no particular order)
Farscape (both endings)
Futurama (both endings)
Babylon 5
Life on Mars (UK)
TNG
DS9

Finales I didn't like (in no particular order)
Battlestar Galactica
Voyager
Enterprise (and I didn't even like the show)
The Dead Zone (but the last three seasons sucked)
The X-Files

I enjoy many series finales, but "All Good Things..." is my all-time favorite. I think it perfectly captured the spirit of the series and was also one of the most epic adventures the characters ever had and they got to solve a problem only these characters could solve, all while being a love letter to the fans in giving us a peek into the future and taking us back to the beginning and showing us long since gone characters like Yar and O'Brien.

Perfect Finales

Angel
Babylon 5
Code Geass
Star Trek: The Next Generation

Flawed, but overall great finales

Avatar: The Last Airbender
Beast Wars
Gurren Lagann
Robin Hood (2006)
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Superman TAS

I have to say TNG: All Good Things... & B5: Sleeping in Light. Both had perfect ending that summed up the essence of both shows and highlighted the main cast of each series. In particular, the scene w/ Picard playing cards w/ his crew at the end is perfect.

Worst would be ENT: These are the Voyages... as it felt all wrong & badly written.

There's a number of them that I like so I'll just pick my top three.

1- The Shield, "Family Meeting"
2- Babylon 5, "Sleeping In Light"
3- Battlestar Galactica, "Daybreak"

Finales I liked (in no particular order)
Futurama (both endings)

You haven't seen the third ending yet. :p

TNG is the best sci-fi ending I can think of, it's just amazing. All the writers work clearly went into that episode and not the other 20-something episodes.

Sports Night, West Wing, and Six Feet Under have awesome endings for none scifi shows.

Enterprise had a great series finale dealing with prejudice and unity.

And then there was another episode.
