Favorite season and season highlights

I agree TOS can come off as a little cheesy when looked at from today's perspective, but I'm a big believer in looking at shows and movies from the context of their times. It's simply unfair not to do so.

So from that perspective, TOS is serious sci-fi( the occasional "Spock's Brain"-like detour aside) and NOT cheesy.

Actually, though I wasn't alive at the time, I've heard from a lot of people who watched Trek in the early 1970s (it began its run in the UK in 1969, around the time it FINISHED in the US!) and....yep, they thought it was pretty hammy and cheesy then as well!

I pretty much enjoyed all the episodes and seasons, apart from a few obviously boring/dull ones. I watched each episode in succession over a period of 3 months (2-3 episodes a day on average). The whole experience was just... amazing lol.

if you say so. I'd never heard the "cheesy" criticism from first-run viewers, I'd always heard it as a criticism from later generations, but ok.

Don't understand how they could've called Star Trek cheesy while watching Doctor Who with a straight face. :guffaw:

Hard to say for sure which is my favourite season. For me, it doesn't just go on just numbers of great episodes.

It's more about how I feel about the armosphere of the season, how well I think the characters are being used, whether I like the overall direction things are going etc.

Here are my highlights of the various seasons:

Season 1:
'Encounter At FarPoint.
'Where No-One Has Gone Before'.
'Hide and Q'.
'Datalore.'
'Heart of Glory'.
'Skin Of Evil'.

Season 2:
'Where Silence Has Lease'.
'A Matter of Honor.'
'The Measure of a Man'.
'Contagion'.
'Q Who?'
'Peak Performance'.

Season 3:
'The Survivors'.
'The Enemy'.
'The Defector'.
'Sins of the Father'.
'Hollow Pursuits'.
'The Best of Both Worlds (1)'.

Season 4:
'Family'.
'Brothers'.
'Remember Me'.
'Reunion'.
'Final Mission'.
'The Wounded'.
'Night Terrors'.
'The Drumhead'.
'The MInd's Eye'.

Season 5:
'Conundrum'.
'Ethics'.
'Cause and Effect'.
'The First Duty'.
'The Inner Light'.
'Time's Arrow (1)'.

Season 6:
'A Fistful of Datas'.
'Tapestry'.
'Birthright (1)'.
'Lessons'.
'Frame of Mind'.

Season 7:
'Descent (2)'.
'Parallels'.
'The Pegasus'.
'Eye of the Beholder'.
'Genesis'.
'Pre-Emptive Strike'.
'All Good Things...'

Just on numbers of episodes, it would seem to be a shootout between Seasons 4 and 7. That's probably fair, although I do really enjoy the first 2 seasons as well.

I feel the crew worked and were written best as a team in the first 2 seasons. Plus I liked the dark and mysterious nature of the Alpha Quadrant, which gradually seemed to be tamed over time.

I think in the end, I will have to give it to Season 4, though. Not just because of the good episode ratio, but because I like the dark psychological feel of it.

That's some list

"encounter at farpoint," "skin of evil," "where silence has lease," "night terrors," etc.

as HIGHLIGHTS?

I can't imagine what the lowpoints are.

Night Terrors is a great episode. And as far as lowpoints, I'd say Sub Rosa. It really is awful.

As should be fairly obvious from my list, I'm a fan of the darker, horror style episodes.

I don't understand the dislike for 'Encounter at Farpoint'. Sure, it has a few silly moments, but overall, its a fine first episode.

I was particularly impressed with Q, because whilst he seems a ridiculous over the top character at first, he gets progressively and genuinely more menacing as the episode goes on.

I also think that it was a good episode for launching the characters, giving most of the cast a chance to stake their claim for why they should be in the rest of the series.

'Skin of Evil' has its problems, I know. The voice acting by the villain is extremely silly, but the fact is that the episode is still a highlight, purely for what happens, and particularly for the last scene.

The last shot in particular of Data standing alone is one of my enduring moments of the whole series.

'Night Terrors' also has its problems, but there were such strong visuals and atmosphere at various points, that its an episode I can watch purely on an aesthetic level.

I don't see any problem with including these episodes as highlights, because they are the ones that get the strongest reaction from me. Now, if I'd included things like 'Justice', 'Haven', 'We'll always have Paris', 'The Loss' etc, that would be a cause for concern!
