Favorite nation title?

i've alway wondered why they used so few forms of government. there never was a commonwealth, kingdom, republic, principality, despotate, and nothing with the term 'free' in the title.
Few? The kind of major ones have a Federation, two Empires, a Union, a Confederacy, an Alliance, a Third Republic, a Hegemony, an Assembly, a Dominion, two Collectives, a Sodality, Nineteen Tribes, a Hierarchy, a Cabal, and a Council.

'third republic'? you forgot 'Consortium', 'Coalition' and in the novels, there is another Republic, The Thallonian Republic which replaced the defunct Thallonian Empire. and the Romulans fractured and became the RSE and the Imperial Romulan State.
yes, few. there must be thousands of species mentioned in st, and you listed about a dozend forms of governments. there are more on earth any given moment with some 200 nation states.

most nations on Earth boil down to presidential republics, constitutional monarchy democracies, communist regimes, tyrannies or parliamentary republics.

Most episodes aren't about each species form of government. We meet character X, who has title Y and thats about it.

They're all kind of cool.

Terran Empire and First Federation sound best though.
United Federation of Planets and Romulan STAR Empire also sound good.
Klingon Empire: not quite as stellar?

Too bland. Just a regular run of the mill empire. Romulan STAR Empire denotes greatness. Terran Empire would also be bland if it weren't for "Terran", which sounds pretty darn cool. If it was Earth Empire, it wouldn't sound special.

The Inter-Stellar Concordium (From the Star Fleet Universe and some of the semi-related Star Fleet Command PC games) has always had a catchy name for me - as well as the Mæsron Alliance from the SFU's Omega Octant, not least because it uses an æ in it!

(In the case of the Mæsrons, there is no species by that title in the Alliance - rather, Mæsra was the colony on which the three founding member governments signed the treaty which brought the union into being.)

The Tholian Assembly, First Federation and Gorn Hegemony sound pretty cool, for they immediately came to mind.

And in reference to the above poster, I liked the sound of the Gorn Confederation in the SFC series (or Gorn Star Kingdom as they are known in KA.)

For me, the name is a good way to distinguish the two.

The Confederation is a democratic society which becomes a Federation ally after they sort out that misunderstanding with the 'brash young captains who shot first and faced embarrssing questions later' (even to the point of recruiting members of a Federation species to serve as fighter pilots in the Confederation Navy!). In short, they are portrayed as one of the 'good guy' powers.

Meanwhile, the Hegemony may, or may not, be quite so well-disposed to the UFP, though there's much less to go on in their case.

Oh, that makes me think of another example - the Tholians. In the SFU, the Assembly is the governing body of the Tholian Holdfast (the pocket state they have in our galaxy) while the empire they used to run back in M81 was the Tholian Will.

(In case you're wondering, in the SFU it was set up that the Tholians enslaved M81 for centuries, were overthrown and driven to the brink of extinction by their Seltorian enforcers, and fled to other galaxies, such as the Milky Way and Draco Dwarf.)
