The retro TV thread got me thinking... In the '70s and '80s, a lot of my "must see" shows had the MTM kitten at the end. It was not always the mark of a successful show, but often something a little different, innovative, or higher quality.

I loved a lot of those shows, but I have to pick Hill Street Blues. It came along at a formative time and changed my whole way of thinking about what TV shows could be. St. Elsewhere was just as good, but HSB came along first.

Of the comedies, it's a tough call but I would vote for The Bob Newhart Show. Its ensemble was just so strong, and characters as originally bizarre as Elliot Carlin come along so rarely.

Like you, I ultimately voted for HSB, but it was a tough call. The other two MTM shows I've seen on the list (Bob Newhat Show and WKRP) are also brilliant.

I always liked WKRP as a kid. The rest of them were a little too 'heavy' for me at that age. I did watch and enjoy the second Newhart (where he ran the Inn) but I figured you were talking about the first one.

I watched Mary Tyler Moore a whole bunch on Nick at Nite when I was in elementary and middle school. I'm sure I didn't understand most of it at the time, but I watched few episodes not too long ago and it still holds up

I can't pick just one. My votes go to:

The Mary Tyler Moore Show
WKRP
Hill Street Blues
Remington Steele

All of which I have on DVD. Out of those four, my most favorite would be WKRP. I also enjoyed Bob Newhart, but not enough to own it.

Dang radio button! :scream:

I went with WKRP.

Very close runners up:
HSB
MTM

I've seen at least one episode of everything listed in the poll.

For me, it can only be Hill Street. Going off the Wiki page, it may be the only one I've seen with any degree of regularity.

DA-DA-DUHDADADA!

With that horrid rendition of "Home to Emily" I cast my vote for The Bob Newhart Show. It was funnier than all the rest.

I have watched all of these series at one time or another. I voted for Hill Street Blues, it was the only one on the list that I would look forward to watching every week.

Bob Newhart's shows were great, and I liked WKRP and Lou Grant. I found St. Elsewhere to be very depressing..and does anyone remember the bizarre Cheers crossover that they did? (I am not making this up, search YouTube, but be warned, it is not for the faint of heart).

Remington Steele had a certain charm, sort of like Moonlighting but with better acting, and The White Shadow gets an honorable mention for the kitten in the MTM logo dribbling a basketball.

So many great shows from MTM, but The Bob Newhart Show will always have a special place in my heart.

I loved every one of those comedies and watched them all regularly. They were all genius, but, objectively speaking, Mary Tyler Moore was probably the best. Nevertheless, I voted for Bob Newhart, because he's my all-time favorite comedian. His droll style really spoke to me (yes, at ten years old I had idols like Bob Newhart :rommie: ). Newhart was really good, but Bob Newhart was better-- if only because of Suzanne Pleshette, who was his perfect counterpart.

The only one of those dramas that I watched on a regular basis was Lou Grant. Certainly a very good show with a great cast of characters.

I voted for The Mary Tyler Moore show, it holds up so well.

I liked St Elsewhere and Hill Street Blues too when they aired here ages ago, I was a kid back then, I remember watching them when I visited my grandparents. Remingtson Steele was fun too.

I'm not that familiar with the other shows, I've only seen a handful of episodes of them except for The White Shadow, I've never heard of that one.

There is no way I could choose just one...or three...or five, for that matter! Great Idea for a Thread, it is just, to me, they all ruled!!!

If I am made to choose, then it is "The Mary Tyler Moore Show"

In "The Dinner Party", when Lou scoops a huge portion of the veal Prince Orloff onto his plate, and there is only enough for each guest to have one portion!

When Ted says anything, whatsoever.

Sue Ann...one of the best supporting semi-reoccurring performances, ever.

Phyllis...period!

In "The Georgette Show", when Georgette opines, "...damn nice!"

But each and every MTM show was excellent!!!
