The retro TV thread got me thinking... In the '70s and '80s, a lot of my "must see" shows had the MTM kitten at the end. It was not always the mark of a successful show, but often something a little different, innovative, or higher quality.
I loved a lot of those shows, but I have to pick Hill Street Blues. It came along at a formative time and changed my whole way of thinking about what TV shows could be. St. Elsewhere was just as good, but HSB came along first.
Of the comedies, it's a tough call but I would vote for The Bob Newhart Show. Its ensemble was just so strong, and characters as originally bizarre as Elliot Carlin come along so rarely.
