Also, the Enterprise shuttle has an interesting history based on a German concept not of WW2 (Sanger Silbervogel, EMW series manned V-2s, or other Nazi space vehicle concepts), but on the postwar Junkers RT-08 STS! That was the 1960s!

Most folks just think of the Dyna Soar...

Not quite the same one as your father's, but the CV-61 Ranger stood in for CVN-65 in STIII.

I'm familiar with the 61, which, sadly, was recently sent to the breakers. My father's Ranger was the first carrier to be built from the keel up as a carrier, as earlier carriers had been converted from other kinds of ships.

    Sorry, but wrong:

The Japanese carrier, the Hosyo, which entered service in December 1922, was the first carrier designed as such from the keel up.

You should have said first US carrier built from the keel up instead. And it was CV-4 Ranger.

If you'd read my original post where I said was father's ship was the CV4 Ranger, where I stated he served in WWII, you'd not have misunderstood my post. Read more carefully next time!

And I never claimed to be speaking internationally, so don't assume!

Actually, they aren't literally the same ship. The TOS Enterprise was launched considerably earlier than the Abrams-universe model (in fact, earlier drafts of the 2009 movie story had the Abrams Enterprise as a replacement for the TOS Enterprise, after the TOS ship was to be destroyed by Nero at the start of the movie.)

Don't worry, everyone else here realizes that.
This, however is just a rumour posted to IMDB and has never been backed up by anyone or anything official.

The Enterprise D is my favourite, closely followed by the A.

Enterprise Refit is so refined, it's hard not to like it.

But I also have taking a liking to Commander Rachel Garrett's ship the USS- Enterprise-C from "Yesterday's Tomorrow."

She took a beating from 4 Romulan Warbirds, went through a time rift to meet up with Picard's Enterprise-D, was repaired and sent back through the rift to fight again.

Be hard to interpret that as anything but wrong.

My fav is the original TOS Enteprise, no carpet in the corridors, no holographic rec rooms, pipes running down the walls. Fully aware that they were in fact the military.

No, the Enterprise was not a warship but a deep space exploration vessel on a 5 year mission. It's secondary role was to defend (key word) Federation territories.

    It's armament was always defensive.

And it wasn't fancy because it was the first one with a basic no frills layout.

    The Enterprise represented the UFP.

I always took the Star fleet as having both a primary and a priority mission: Their primary mission is exploration, but the priority is military action if required. So most of the time they act as explorers but if a military action is required that takes priority over the exploratory/scientific mission. Explorers first, military second until the need for military action comes up, then it flips.

    Enterprise refit for me:)

I'm late to this party, but add my voice to the chorus protesting that the TOS Enterprise and the JJprise are being treated as the same ship.

Which is all semantics if your defensive armaments can lay waste to a planet and your agency of peaceful exploration has a general order that makes that an option.

It has always been my understanding that no Starfleet Commander can initiate hostilities like a military commander . The UFP rules were to explore first and DEFEND second.

I'm sure that somebody around here with a better memory than I could come up with an exception or five to that.

What was Kirk's and Picard's war records and commendations? Then compare to how many planets brought into the UFP...

Picard in Enterprise-D told the Malcorians that the Enterprise was NOT a warship. Verbatim. Kirk often said Enterprise was a scientific vessel...

That's what they call moving the goal post.
