I've seen a lot of discussion over the years as to which Trek film score is each person's favorite. But I'm curious within each score, which cue you think is the best. I decided I'd just start at the beginning with TMP.

For me, on this one, it's probably "The Enterprise." I know that the scene it accompanies is a bit controversial, with some loving the long, detailed beauty passes of the Enterprise and others thinking it moves at a snail's pace and stalls the movie. But regardless of what you think of the scene, I think the music is absolutely perfect; some of Goldsmith's best work ever.

What do you think? What's your favorite cue and why?

For me, the Klingon theme. I think it beautifully underscores the nature of the warrior race, and serves perfectly as we see the three K't'inga class battlecruisers closing in on the screen. :)

Best part of the entire movie.

My favorite (if I had to pick) would be the V'Ger music, I love how ominous it sounds, with a sprinkling of "the thrill of exploring" thrown in, but mostly ominous, unknowable, Alien.....the whole Soundtrack is just amazing...

Not being musically minded I can't recall specific scores but the impression I have the movie was that the music was superb. Added to the epic nature of the film.

My favorite moment in the score are the low strings at the beginning of Spock's Arrival, but a Klingon Battle is probably my favorite cue overall.

The title of this thread should be, "Which cue from the Sony TMP expanded album is your favorite?"

I love this score. I do think much of the film is slow, but the music is incredible. And "The Enterprise" scene lasts a long time but it doesn't drag IMO. It's a beautiful scene. The music there really helps that scene I'm sure.

Have any of you heard the main title performed by other orchestras? For some reason some performances are way slower than the film score recording. That really bothers me whenever I hear it.

The Klingon music was my favorite for a long time, but lately, I've really been liking the entire V'ger sequence from where they start into the cloud up until the probe shows up.

I got hear to David Newman conduct it live a few years ago. He was a violinist on the original sessions. He nailed the tempo and sound. It was stunning!

Yeah, the more complete score includes the following tracks you missed:
  • Malfunction
  • Goodbye Klingon/Goobye Epsilon 9
  • TV Theme/Warp Point Eight
  • No Goodbyes
  • TV Theme/Warp Point Nine
  • Meet V’ger
  • Micro Exam
  • System Inoperative
  • Inner Workings
Meet V’ger is a fave of mine.

I voted for "Klingon Battle". These are pretty much the only cues I listen to from the score:

"Main Title"
"Ilia's Theme" (overture version)
"Klingon Battle"
"Spock's Arrival" (alternate; better than the used version, in my opinion)
"End Titles"

I don't think the TMP score has one track I *don't* love, but I went for Klingon Battle - that theme is so iconic & actually encapsulates that race in one arrangement, which is a superb musical achievement.

I'd go for The Enterprise next as it's glorious, with The Cloud soon after - all the beats passing into V'Ger are stunning.

Great idea too, going through the scores like this.

Let me be contrary and say that I much prefer Leaving Drydock to The Enterprise. Not quite so ponderous.

I voted for leaving drydock, it was a close call, they are two of my favourite scenes in the movie. The drydock music is just that bit more exciting for me.

I wish I could have voted for the Klingon Theme, as well as the main title since they were equally my favorites.

Every last bit of it
Arguably the finest scifi score of all time and one of the most beautiful film scores ever
But I love the force field

I voted for "The Enterprise," but could have also gone for "Klingon Battle." I'm also really fond of the two "TV Theme" bits, actually-- nice reworking.

Well, I guess I'm the oddball in the group  , voting for Floating Office. I don't really know what it is, but it just seems to perfectly capture the right feeling for that big ol' station orbiting lazily in it's arc around the Earth, beyond just what was seen on screen. :)

Man, this is TOUGH!!!!

For me, it's between two of them:

1) Overture/Ilia's Theme

2) The Meld.

I ultimately voted for The Meld because I just love the way Goldsmith triumphantly celebrates the Decker-Ilia union.

TMP had some definite flaws movie wise, but I just LOVE LOVE LOVE the climax with V'Ger, and the music is just fantastic.
