Favorite aspect of Star Trek?

All up, the characters. The heroes, the villains etc. Not necessarily because all the characters were likeable, but because they were interesting. That's probably why I had such a hard time getting into TNG when I rented the S1 DVD's, but loved Ds9's motley crew. I imagine if be a lot harder on VOY if it hadn't had The Doctor, Seven etc. I like me some dynamics.

So much this.

General: Aliens, space.

TOS: Nothing.

TNG: The idea of that desirable, prosperous future. The overall pleasant design.

DS9:The characters, the station itself, Bajoran culture. The exploration of metaphysics.

Voy: The original idea of the series.

ENT: The better makeup and prosthetics for the aliens.

I think I'm reiterating what a couple of people said better than how I will, but it's my honest answer so I'll put it up.

Roddenberry had a fixed plan when he created Trek, and he personal chose Brana to continue that plan. And it shows. Some of the shows were considered risky in the mid to late nineties, because ethics, morality and equality weren't sexy. Which is funny, 'cos what's really risky is doing the same thing in the mid sixties when racial and sexual equality was on paper, but pretty much nowhere else.

Brana took that and ran with it. I grew up Catholic, so I'm not really fond of having parables and cheesy stories crammed down my throat. I never felt that was the case with Trek. It was space,Cool. Aliens,Cool. Plot,Cool. And a rare thing in the competitive world of tv ratings, a message that would have actually discouraged bigots from watching, Very Cool.

Love this question. I get very frustrated with people who do not watch Trek and feel that Star Trek is about "ray guns" and "rocket ships".

The strength of Star Trek is that it is one of the few visions of the future that is positive about humanity. How we will get past racism , hatred, and solving our problems with war.

to see a great example of this.

Who is 'Brana'? Rick Berman? Brannon Braga? Braga didn't join TNG until after Gene Roddenberry was no longer part of the day to day production.

Ye, sorry, kinda pooped the bed on that one. Knew what I meant more than I knew what I knew, which was less than I tried to say.

I meant Berman but all the 'B' names muddled in my head because I have mostly been passive fan, and trying to mix fact with opinion.

Facts are facts, and my opinions are honest but way fallible, but mixing the two is just a mess to read. Sorry

Knew what I meant more than I knew what I knew, which was less than I tried to say.

Nice sentence. I like it a lot. :bolian:

Puts me in mind of the Bilbo Baggins quote:
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

The philosophy of the Prime Directive.

Believe it or not, i think it is a sound philosophy and it begins to ring true when you study history.

A lot of cultures have been destroyed by the interference of another culture. A lot of knowledge has been lost as well, and it's a shame.

Considering how much technology has advanced in the last fifty years, i often wonder how much more advanced we could be if things like the Dark Ages or religion never happened.

Feel free to steal it, I thought I was rambling, but slap on a method to that madness!

I don't which tickles me more, your awesome name or comparison to that awesome quote. If anyone is curious; yes, using that Bilbo quote at a family reunion does legitimately give you 30 mins to disappear whilst they figure it out. Sorry Nan ><

Also, @ Starborn Dragon, agree plenty, but going into it more would also entail philo and Histo forums to get in on action, so we could give it validity it deserves, perhaps with a smidgen of 'wouldn't it be nice' ><

This:

"..Now I don't pretend to tell you how to find happiness and love when every day is just a struggle to survive, but I do insist that you do survive, because the days and the years ahead are worth living for. One day soon man is going to be able to harness incredible energies, maybe even the atom. Energies that could ultimately hurl us to other worlds in some sort of spaceship. And the men that reach out into space will be able to find ways to feed the hungry millions of the world, and to cure their diseases. They will be able to find a way to give each man hope, and a common future, and those are the days worth living for."

The vision of a better future. I probably won't live to see it, but I have to believe that it will happen.

I'm someone who enjoys plots, character development, friendships and problem solving.

Kilana2, I believe that in this respect, we are of one mind--without benefit of meld, no less. ;) For me, character development is paramount (if you can forgive the pun), especially when it comes to friendships and/or romances between characters. I also enjoy the technical protocols that characters follow when they're solving problems under pressure.

The way Humans and Earth are shown.Hope for the future.I wouldn't mind serving in Starfleet.Even as custom inspector...

Good thread! I think it's important once in a while to ask oneself the question what it is exactly that draws us to Star Trek.

For me, I'm just going to come out and say the escapism aspect of it is really important to me. Star Trek is a chance to get away from the stresses of daily life, to relieve depression or sadness, to forget about the serious stuff around you. Star Trek is a way to get back to the simpler times of childhood. Star Trek is a safe and comfortable world.

Beneath the surface, of course, Star Trek has so many more great things going for it: great characters, wonderful actors, imaginative, moving, thought-provocing stories and writing, amazing music, inspiring design aesthetics etc.

But when it comes down to it, first and foremost Star Trek is just this warm, happy place to come back to. Even after what feels like a life-time of being a fan.

IMO Earth is shown only on rare occasions. Most of the action takes place offworld......
But we all know what life on Earth are,and how Humanity is.

How life on Earth is (23. or 24th) is quite different from how life on Earth was (nowadays). But aliens are simply more interesting.

Obviously there is no unemployment on Earth anymore. Everybody is highly educated and has purpose in his/her life.

Compared with that, social unrests on Trill for instance are more exciting, as we know only few things about Trill.
