Fashion Trends/Faux Pas'... What do you dislike?

More for my own curiousity than anything else... what sorts or things do you think should "go" when it comes to fashion, beauty/personal hygiene, for example, big sunglasses, greasy hair, funky coloured nails, etc.

Hip-hugging, barely-above-the-promised-land jeans on women. Very, very people few look good in them. The rest of the time, you see rolls of fat hanging out on all sides, even on people who would otherwise look fit. So. NOT. Attractive.

For the men, the baggy, boxer-showing, clown-size pants on young men. It makes them all look short and fat, and they have to go around holding up their pants all day. I mean, how can you take someone seriously when their ass is entirely outside of their jeans?
On the plus side, it does make it laughably difficult for them to run from the police.

I also don't care for the "fashion" of tattoos. Too many young people get them, not realizing that they are NOT easily removed. Hair will grow back after a cut, make-up and hair are easily changed but tattoos are permanent. If a responsible, level-headed adult wants one, fine, but too many young idiots get one because it's "cool," only to realize later that they regret it. Anyone so easily swayed by fashion trends should not to anything permanent to their body.

I don't mind most things, but I can't stand these "cuffed sandals" that have come out. Shoes should be hideous and sensible or fabulous and impractical, but these are hideous and impractical!

^ Agree about the tattoos. Many of my generation are now looking back on them and saying... "What the hell was I thinking!" A tattoo requires a commitment. Most twenty year-olds can't even commit to a career, major or magazine subscription let alone a tattoo.

As for my fashion dislikes... I hate that most clothes these days are branded to death. If I wanted to be a walking advertisement for something I would wear a sandwich board and rent the space. But instead clothing designers have tricked you the buyer into advertising their ugly crap for free.

I also don't get the new trend for teen, preteen and elementary school girls to dress like hookers. A miniskirt or belly-shirt is NOT something that a nine year-old should be wearing. I also want to slap the soup out of parents who actually buy the crap too. Have these people not heard of sexual predators? It's like they are advertising their kids to molesters and it gives me the creeps. Have a little common sense here people!

so glad I don't have to look at muffin-tops falling out of people's jeans anymore. It was surprising to me how many people thought people would want to see that. yech.

Exactly this. If whacking parents who dress their kids like tramps wouldn't get me fired I'd be on my 5th baseball bat. The ultimate sin is dressing young girls in Playboy branded clothing. "But my daughter just likes the bunny" is no excuse, though it's one I've heard several times.

Auntiehill, you forgot to mention the "gorgeous" piercings and tattoos that are on show with those low-hip jeans. Talk about vomit-inducing. :ack:

Crocs. Those dayglo, plastic, huge ugly sandals that're designed to look for feet two sizes bigger than the size they say they are for.

Want to wear them in the garden? Go for it.

Don't wear them in public, especially if you're a man.

Young men who think coolness is based on looking and sounding like you've been to prison..

Young girls dressed like cheap tarts at best..full on prostitutes at worst..

Crocs...Amen to eliminating them entirely... However a LOT of the eldery around here seem to think that they can be worn EVERYWHERE..and with ANYTHING..Saw a man wearing a suit with them on his feet.. Any man who wears them in public needs to taken out and shot in front of a wall...
Lord, just cut shoes out from truck tires..it'll look better..

I saw a guy just the other day, handsome, cut as hell, dude could play Superman. Nice, clean cut hair, no facial hair, waxed muscular chest, bludging arms. He was wearing a clean wife-beater, khaki cargo shorts and orange Crocs with white socks with the colored stripe (blue) on them.

I hate "emo pants." The kind that are tight all over but really tight from the knees down. Do you know what I'm talking about? They look unflattering on absolutely on everyone.

This. No grown man should wear Crocs out in public---EVER. They look cute on your 6 year old, but downright pathetic on the 40 year old Dad.

The worst thing about emo pants is that boys usually have to buy them from the women's department.

Oh, and I hate Uggs.

I truly despise this trend of girls wearing pajama bottoms outdoors like they are pants. Normally you'd think I'd be in to college age girls walking around in sleepwear, but it just bugs me to no end. I think it is because they are actually trying to emulate someone who is so apathetic they can't even change their pants. Were in a fucking recession, put on some Hilary Clinton slacks and go to work!

And what's wrong with Ugg boots providing you're not seen wearing them in public?

Scott Schuman recently discussed this, when he posted a nicely dressed 16yr old he described as having an "anti-Jersey Shore" look. I agree with him that it's very refreshing to see such a clean look on a young girl. Brave of her to dress that way, really. Take a look here and scroll down to Thea from 28th July.

Try not to get stuck staring at the girl on the bike from 29th July on your way down... :adore:

Holdfast, do you agree that most of those folks in the pics on your link are dressed in a classic classy sense?

Nope.

Some are both. Mr Zegna, from 27th July, for instance. Most aren't dressed classically, although despite that there are still some classy looks within that non-classic group eg Andi & Jordan from 26th July (classic may or may not equal classy, depending on context). And there are some way-out looks there too, which frankly are more conceptual or just plain-odd/interesting.

Scott tends to photo a LOT of people in and around the fashion industry (along with a smattering of interesting people on the street), so you tend to see a biased view of clothes there. I still like his blog a lot though, because there are often some fun ideas there.
