Fans of the Star Wars Expanded Universe

Until there is official, final word on the subject, I’m just going to stay positive and hope that, 3+ years from now, we’re still getting Star Wars books that build on the old Star Wars books, not JJ Wars.

If Star Trek is any kind of precedent, there won't be any novels based on the Abrams Star Wars movie. Though who knows how the novel line will continue after the Abrams movie is released.

There may be. The main reason there haven't been nuTrek novels is due to friction between Paramount and CBS over the matter.

I think the major events and characters of the EU might be retained. Thrawn, the Jedi Academy, and the Vong War are sufficiently high-profile, for instance, that they might get consideration.

The minor details are far less likely to be respected.

Nothing in the EU is high profile enough compared to the movies. If the event fits with the story they want for the movie, then it will be kept, otherwise it will be tossed. Based on actor ages, odds are the movies will start after the new republic era, but if that history doesn't make sense for the movie then they'll ignore it. And they won't want to tie their hands with future events like the Vong war.

You're probably right about pure-book elements. Things that have made it into the games (like Thrawn) are more likely to be retained, IMO.

It's Del Rey. Their editorial modus operandi for NJO was to use character deaths whenever possible to advance plot developments and sales. Given they wanted to kill Luke in Vector Prime and that Lucas vetoed Anakin being the central character in NJO, the character of Anakin Solo was DOA.

Ironically the only people who blamed this on Lucas was Del Rey editorial.

I think anyone hoping the new films will pay *any* attention whatsoever to the EU is going to be sorely disappointed. At best there may just be a scant few cherry picked events ro characters that they might hold on to, but other than that, good luck!

Not a huge loss IMO. I stopped reading the EU books around the time New Rebellion & The Crystal Star came out, so I realise I've missed a tone of stuff, but from what I hear the ratio of quality material to time wasting dreck is even lower than it used to be. As far as the stories focused on the movie characters go, the only books that were any good were the Zahn and Stackpole novels.

I also don't subscribe to the inexplicably popular notion that the Thrawn trilogy is perfect material for a straight up screen adaptation. It quite simply is not. Those books are written as a single story broken into three volumes, not a trilogy of independent yet thematically connected stories. What's more, as befitting a novel, they're very light on action. That's fine because generally speaking, action on page can be shockingly dull. There's also an awful lot of pottering about and not doing an awful lot in those books and the main characters spend most of the time simply reacting to, or often just watching what the more interesting antagonist is doing next.

I don't think anything recent has been as dire as The Crystal Star. Just FYI.

Although I'm a bit behind as well....I haven't read much since Legacy of the Jedi. I didn't really like the way that mini went, although I give it props for solidifying Ben Skywalker as an interesting protagonist. I do plan to catch up eventually.

I hope they continue the non-Disney timeline, though it will be interesting to see how they brand it if they do keep going and stuff doing new stuff based on whatever happens in the sequel trilogy.

If they are not I hope they don't just shut it down. If the post-ROTJ EU as it is now is to end I'd like a big event with a proper goodbye to the Big Three (and Lando).

I absolutely love the Thrawn Trilogy but it will not make for a good movie trilogy, because it's about military enemies and not a Sith enemy. The crazy clone evil Jedi thing was just embarrassing. And the crazy clone evil Luuuuuuuuuuuuke was even worse.

I would like it if they have Benedict playing the evil Sith leader who has a Thrawn like military commander leading his fleet, though!

I have a friend in publishing, Lucasbooks will be relabeling old EU "The Visions of Luke Skywalker" basically they are visions Luke has of a possible past, and future, while he is meditating on Dagobah after ROTJ

I'm hoping for a brand new EU Keeping a few of the characters (I rather think Mara Jade will make it to the new continuity) that will rekindle my interest...

Mara may make it in, but she'll be a different character. Mara was the antagonist/love interest for Luke in the books. Mark Hamill is too old to be the lead in the new movies. If Mara makes it into the new movie, she'll be the antagonist/love interest for the new main character and as a result will be 20+ years younger than Luke.

Unless they change the timeline, Thrawn would be dead. The actors are all too old for the Thrawn trilogy. There is no reason to mention Thrawn as a character from events that happened before the movie occurs. There will be too few people who know who he is. If Thrawn does make it in, his backstory will also be heavily revised to make him a contemporary of the new hero instead of Luke/Han.

Gotta love those Dagobah 'shrooms....

The only part of the EU that I'm a fan of is ancient Star Wars (Tales of/Dawn of the Jedi), so I think I'm safe from the new trilogy.

I also have a friend working for Lucasbooks, he just told me they had your friend terminated for leaking unsubstantiated rumors.

I also have a friend at lucasbooks who said that your friend was terminated for saying the other guys friend had been terminated for spreading unsubstantiated rumours

Any EU fan that thought there was the slightest chance of a sequel trilogy not throwing it all out the window was kidding themselves.

Thankfully, most of it is complete garbage, so there's no harm done.

All I know is if the movies do anything to negate the existence of Trioculus, Palpatine's three eyed son, I will so protest.
