Fanboys official site - Star Wars parody

My opinion turned on the movie after I listened to an interview with the director on a podcast. I thought it was going to be an utter piece of crap teen movie, but it's clear that nerds made the film - and like another small nerd film, Free Enterprise, they managed to get William Shatner to do a cameo.

I'm glad to see this movie finally has a release date. I think I saw the initial trailer about a year ago! This really looks like a fun romp with its heart in the right place. :)

This film has quite the history. I believe it was scheduled for release a while ago but Harvey Weinstein -- who had funded and was going to distribute the film -- cut out an important sub-plot that according to the director was the driving point of the film, its emotional epicenter. The director and (ironically) a bunch of fans lobbied for the original cut to be perserved, and amazingly Weinstein listened and the film as it was suppose to be is being released in theaters, finally.

I mean you could probably make a film or documentary just on the film's journey. I remember hearing that the film was at one stage going to be headed for DVD and that was it (and this was going to be after Weinstein had cut the pivotal sub-plot). Like firehawk12 said, though, if you listen to the director and hear what he has to say, he is a fan at heart and someone who passionately fought for this story to be told in the fashion that it was originally intended, so I give him kudos and because of that (and because the trailer does look kind of funny, in a nerdy way) I'm going to be checking Fanboys out.

I got a feeling that this film will be a big disappointment when all is said and done. After being pushed back for nearly two years and the fan-hype over the film will cause people to set their expectations too high. But what do I know.

I'll probably wait until it comes out on DVD before seeing it. One thing that bugs me from an earlier trailer is the way Trek fans are portrayed as being hopelessly nerdy with no connection to reality, yet the protagonist Star Wars fans are seen to be, while nerdy, hip, cool, and can shack up with hot chicks. The thing I liked about Free Enterprise was that it didn't trash other sci-fi shows/movies to highlight the "awesomeness" of Star Trek. Then again, the movie has Shat in it, so what do I know?

I'll believe Fanboys has come out when I own the DVD. (I'm not expecting massive distribution on this.)

Which reminds me. Does anyone know if 5-25-77 has come out? I saw the trailer for that a few years, and it looked, well, interesting in a Napoleon Dynamite meets That '70s Show sort of way.

They were both due out in 2005/2006. Neither has happened yet. I also won't believe it until I have the dvds. In fact, I sadly suspect that, like Tom Cruise, they will never come out.

My thoughts exactly. Why is it cooler to be a star wars nerd than a star trek nerd? I've met my fair share of nerds coming from both camps and it seems to be pretty even when it comes to nerdiness. The lead Star Wars nerd reminds me of Booger from Revenge of the Nerds Series.

I think it's simple why Wars nerds are 'cooler' than Trek nerds. Trek is about exploring, science, being political, unity, hope.

Wars is about blowing shit up and laser-swords.

Never underestimate the masses to shurk thought for "kewl."

wow finally this movie is surfacing. I heard about 3 years ago. A jab at Harry Knowles. Oh boy he'll go the distance with that one.

I remember the plot involved a star wars fan who was dying and his friends fulfilling his last wish.

This one looks like Shatner doing a cameo. Free Enterprise had a number of scenes with Bill at length. ;)
