Fan reactions to Starfleet Academy's female Jem'Hadar/Klingon hybrid character

Just randomly watched a rather scathing review of the premiere episode that popped up for me on YouTube and they happen to mention that Lura Thok’s father was Jem’Hadar and her mother Klingon. For those two people who were wondering. :)

Maybe if you do lots of ketracel your blood ketracel content is super elevated...
Interesting theory. Although I had assumed in the millennium we hadn’t seen the Jem’Hadar they had finally found a way to rid themselves of the ketracel-white addiction. Would be kinda weird to have an officer running around that’s a drug addict, I guess.

On an unrelated note, at the start of the video these reviewers shared a screenshot of the message that press people had received from Paramount+. What’s interesting is that this says that “episodic titles” were embargoed “for the Monday before that specific episode is available to stream”. This would mean that Seán from TrekCulture goofed when he mentioned all the titles for the first six episodes in their first review. Oops!

It struck me her name is not the same as any naming convention of either Klingons or Jem'Hadar. I suppose it's possible Jem'Hadar adopted the use of family names like most cultures have when they became a species capable of having families but until this Jay-Den Kraag character I can't recall any full Klingon who had a surname unless it's his House name or something just adaopted into this styling.

^ Yeah, I’ve wondered about the name Lura Thok as well. If they had just snuck an apostrophe between the two words it would actually fit the known naming scheme rather well: Lura’Thok. Although a key difference would still be that most Jem’Hadar names in Deep Space Nine had two syllables in the name after the apostrophe.

It’s possible that in 800 years they changed whatever convention they had for naming Jem’Hadar. I mean, it looks like they went from an all male clone army to individuals who interbreed with other species. I’m sure something like this happens with a few cultural changes here and there. Or it’s just a reflection of her being half-Klingon. “Lura” especially does sound vaguely like a female Klingon name, doesn’t it? I mean, it’s “Lursa” with one letter missing.

Regarding “Jay-Den Kraag”: Looking at the list of Klingons on MA it looks like there have been a handful of hyphenated Klingon names in the past: Hon-Tihl, Kol-Sha, Kee-Bhor, Barak-Kadan. And although there is just one instance of a Klingon name that seems to be given name + family name (M'Kota R'Cho) I think we can assume Jay-Den Kraag is actually Jay-Den, son of Kraag. Kraag at least sounds like a proper classic Klingon name. :klingon:

My first thought too was either son of Kraag or from the House of Kraag and Humans being the humanocentrics they are adjusted it for their own lens. Same I suppose could have been done during the parisses squares tournament.

Inevitably the name of his father and his house will be revealed and neither of them will be Kraag and I will have a headache trying to work it out.

My brain is very fond of consistency and I very much need to explain away any inconsistencies. It's a compulsion I can't help I'm pretty broken.

I just noticed the prominent / main cast aliens are all some sort of hybrid and nobody seems to be a 100% one species except the Klingon character?

We also probably shouldn’t forget that Klingons don’t use the Latin alphabet. So any Klingon name we’ve ever seen was really just an “anglicized” version of a name that uses symbols and phonetics completely foreign to ours. I mean, as far as we know Gowron, Duras, Kahless, Ch’Pok or Dak’Rah could just as well be transliterated as Gow-Ron, Du-Ras, Kah-Less, Ch-Pok or Dak-Rah. So he might also just be Jay’Den. ;)

And I’m rather confident Kraag will be his father’s name. The early teasers already alluded to the fact that we would see his father. And Kraag just sounds so much like a single Klingon name. But we’ll see.

It does look more aesthetically pleasing with an apostraphy.

Kraag is a delightfully Klingon-y name.
