Bethesda Announces Editor and DLC for Fallout 3

Bethesda has announced that they plan on making a content editor and downloadable content for Fallout 3 available in the coming weeks. The official editor for Fallout 3, called the G.E.C.K. (Garden of Eden Creation Kit), will be available for free download in December and will allow PC users to create and add their own content to the game. In addition, the first official downloadable content, Operation: Anchorage, will be available for the Xbox 360 and PC in January, and more downloadable content coming in February and March.

“We’ve always seen the original world of Fallout 3 as a foundation for even more content. Some created by us, and a lot more created by users,” said Todd Howard, game director for Fallout 3. “It’s fun to create your own character, but it can be equally fun to create your own adventures. We can’t wait to see what the community does with the G.E.C.K.”

More info after the jump.

From the press release:

The release of the G.E.C.K. provides the community with tools that will allow players to expand the game any way they wish. Users can create, modify, and edit any data for use with Fallout 3, from building landscapes, towns, and locations to writing dialogue, creating characters, weapons, creatures, and more.

Three downloadable content packs will be coming to Xbox 360 and Games for Windows Live starting in January that will add new quests, items, and content to Fallout 3.

* Operation: Anchorage. Enter a military simulation and fight in one of the greatest battles of the Fallout universe – the liberation of Anchorage, Alaska from its Chinese Communist invaders. An action-packed battle scheduled for release in January.
* The Pitt. Journey to the industrial raider town called The Pitt, located in the remains of Pittsburgh. Choose your side. Scheduled for release in February.
* Broken Steel. Join the ranks of the Brotherhood of Steel and rid the Capital Wasteland of the Enclave remnants once and for all. Continues the adventure past the main quest. Scheduled for release in March."

Sounds great!

I swear it's hilarious that both Fallout and Fable DLC will come before GTA DLC.
They sound like they should be Mass Effect priced, but I imagine they'll be 10 dollars. I still find that last one kind of strange, especially considering one of the possible endings.

The official SDK is also good news. This means I may need to grab the PC version some time in the future.

Well finished the game last night, I liked it. [...] I started an evil character last night
I bought the game on Friday and today I finished my first game as a good guy. Now I'll be an evil one. Being Jesus is nice and all, but at some point you just want to shoot some of these people. ;) Especially given that you're already pointing a gun at them. :D I didn't do that many sidequests so I finished the game at about 21h playtime at level 19. My build was pretty much the one KLOEN described for a sniper. It just sort of happened that way. I guess I'll try for an energy kinda guy now.

I just don't see any real advantage to being evil in any of these games other than minute story detail differences. They really need to make money impossible to get... but even without using any glitches, I was able to get 12000 caps just from doing random chores and selling stuff.

there is an extra perk you can get, its really helpfull and you can get it early, go to the shop owner in megaton and do her radiation poisioning quest, stand by the bomb to get +2 rad/sec and get up to 800 rads, go back to her, wwhen she heals you you get this wicked perk that whenever your limb is crippled, it will heal itself

this wicked perk that whenever your limb is crippled, it will heal itself
As far as I remember your limb only heals itself later when you're radiated heavily. At least, my limbs never healed themselves later (although it's amazing what an hour of sleep can do).

Being evil has massive advantages though, you just rob everyone while they're out and when you see someone with a weapon you like, you just shoot them. Doing as Mr Burke requested was sad. I immediately flung myself from the tower as punishment.Seeing Moira in her new state was also sad. I have to try very hard not to go the good way, but I'm getting better ;).

It was weird, at first I didn't know what to do, then I saw that hammer thingie and just hit the glass. I got a slightly different ending than sacrificing myself by pushing the buttons which I tried afterwards (having seen what whats-her-name does).

Well playing evil does make it a different game.
Naturally the quests are pretty much the same but some of the side stuff is really different.
It's amazing how many people just open up on you.
I also notice that a lot more people are a lot less willing to trade with you or return trade with you.
Once you tap them out it takes a lot longer for them to resupply.
you also level up much faster because there is soooo much more to break into.
One trick some of you may or not be aware of is this.
When you come up to a place where a terminal is locking a door or safe, take the door or safe first because you can still hack the terminal afterward for more XP points. ;)

I don't know if it's been mentioned but when you're proper evil when you go to paradise falls this slaver always gives you stuff like ammo. Wicked stuff.:shifty:

Anyway, I don't know about others but I was pretty pissed that there's an ending to the game, I thought it was going to be like Oblivion where there's no end to it.

I've found that I don't like being a bad guy for too long. Sure, going on a five minute rampage maybe, but being evil all the time? That takes stamina.

They need to make it actually worth while to be evil though. I mean, I'm at "Very Good" and I steal things all the time, so it's not like you can't do anything bad if you're playing good. It's just that if you're bad, you are either disadvantaged or nothing happens.

Of course, the big problem with being bad is that in the game it comes down to killing people and ultimately, that just makes things that much harder because there are just more good people in the game than bad people. Even then, as a super good character, I'm able to bribe my way into Paradise Falls so even that advantage is taken away.

I'm still not sure what they can do to give you a good reason to play bad. Maybe if you could complete the quests in half the time and still get credit or maybe you get extra perks or whatever, I'm not sure. But as it stands, money is probably the worst incentive to play bad.

You can bribe your way into Paradise Falls? I just walked in with the Vengeance and let rip. Didn't even bother with VATS, it's too much fun to just spray away; none of that aiming nonsense for me! Mmm, I love the smell of burnt slavers in the morning... ;)
Besides, I figured I'll get in when I play through on 'evil'. I agree though, being an evil character with a high speech skill should allow you to use intimidation rather than persuasion or force traders into giving you discounts.

In fact there's allot about this game that could have been done to make it more enjoyable. For instance, I think it's a bit of a waste that you can manufacture (mostly useless) weapons while all you can do with the standard weapons is keep them in good condition. I think it would have added so much more to the game if you had the ability to customise you weapons and armour in much the same way you can customise you character's appearance. Change the colours, add decals, customise the weapons with scopes, suppressors, increase the range and magazine size, change the calibre or even have the opportunity to recreate the .223 pistol (or something similar) from Fallout 1 & 2. It'd give a player more incentive to increase their repair skill than to simply stop it from jamming and keep the damage level up by a few points.

I just started the game a few hours ago and I'm having the time. I've always been a fan of post apocalyptic scenarios.

That alien blaster weapon is awesome, I swear I can take anything out with just one shot from it, except those death crawlers, they take two hits.

This made me laugh. :)

And yes, the body remained there until I went through the door and pushed it.

Well I can say without a doubt I enjoyed playing the good Character more than the evil.
I mean sure it is fun reverse pickpocketing little smartassed characters like Princess but (and I know this will sound silly because it's just a game) I kinda felt like shit after blowing up megaton.
Plus the fact after doing so puts a funky green hue on most of the game afterward.
I know I didn't have to do so to stay evil, all you pretty much have to do is break into places you don't belong and take things that aren't yours but I'm trying to see all the different story angles.
It is nice to know if I see a "power up book" or something else I really want I just take it but I had no idea the first go around how sensitive the whole "Good Karma, Bad Karma thing was.
On the rare occasion I stole something I'd beat feet over to the guy in Rivet City and give him a bunch of water.
Now I know it's not that big of a deal.

Did you guys know the game is banned in India because of the Karma system and 2 headed cows? :wtf:

One thing I find a little odd is that if you are playing as 'evil', the main storyline missions have one section where there does not appear to be an 'evil' option. That being the part where you have to get into Little Lamplight. You really have no choice that I could tell except to free the children from Paradise Falls (either blast them out or buy them from the slavers). Either way you get good karma no matter what. All of the other missions have good and bad karma options, including the ending. I thought it was especially strange given the game developers' attention to minute details throughout the game world.

It's because you can't kill children in the game. Even though, technically, you do that if you blow up Megaton.

Plus, even if you could shoot them, you can't get in unless they raise the gate and corpses can't do that for you. So there should've been some kind of underhanded speech option.

Because of the way the quest is designed, I guess they didn't need to account for the possibility.

True, but why can't you trick/bribe your way in with enough Speech ability?

You can. I chose not to because I needed to get the Paradise Falls quest to collect the achievement, but you can skip doing that completely and walk right in.

Also, if you have the Child at Heart perk, you can walk right in as well.

What I don't get about Little Lamplight accounts for one of the many major plot holes in the game. How the hell do they keep a stable population if they kick out everyone at 16/18 (the age is yet another inconsistency in the game)?
