FACT TREK—The Death Slot (or: The Flying Fickle Finger of Fate)

ROWAN
It’s a UPI report says that the top Russian television show is just like Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In.

MARTIN
Well, if CBS can steal, why can't the Russians?
I forgot to add this gag was probably a dig at Hee Haw, which debuted on CBS as a summer 1969 replacement for The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour and then got a full pickup for the fall (1969-70) season.

Christopher beat me to the Monkees which used many, many quick cuts and set-ups. I think James Frawley won the Emmy for directing their first year.

Since it is drawing attention to the Monkees, I forgive it.

We just saw the episode where, at the end, they are confronted (in an interview) with the question about whether they played their own instruments or not. A peeved Mike Nesmith (is there any other kind) was like, "We just came off a tour of 12 cities -- if I didn't play, I'd be in big trouble!"

Peeved, yes.

In his autobiography, much like Shatner, he comes across people later in life and asks them for something and they say, “Don’t you know I hate you!?” He does write a lot in retrospect of how dickish he knows he was.

Wow, really? Mike was always my favorite Monkee because he seemed so nice and laid-back. If any of them had been a jerk in real life, I would've expected it to be Mickey, or maybe Davy. I guess I should know better than to expect screen personas to reflect the real people.

If you watch the interviews, you'll see Mike's sharpness.

Bill: Mike, at lunch you were talking about how you were planning to buy a house. Why do you want a house?
Mike: Of all the... Why do you like that shirt, Bill? To keep the wind off of me.

(imagine Mike's tone as sarcastic as possible.)

Don't get me wrong. I love Mike, and I think he's very talented. He was also the biggest jerk of the Monkees (Peter was probably the sweetest).

Well, in Mike's defense, it was kind of a dumb question.

Now, that certainly came across on camera.

Mike and Peter really did not get along, apparently, though Mike posted a nice encomium when Peter, a pretty good soul, from what I could tell, passed. Micky is fun, enthusiastic, good time, was one of the vampire drinking buddies with John, Ringo, Harry Nilsson, in the early 70s. Said he got along with Mike fine in the 60s and they obviously hit it off in the Mike/Micky show I was blessed to see. Micky’s touring now (workhorse too) in a Monkees tribute show with the band they used on reunion tours.

discussion = "discursive" = off the course = talking about Hey, hey, we're the show that premiered four nights after STAR TREK

there

Can we move on from the damned Monkees...again?

Okay...bringing it back to TOS, how about another Screen Gems-related reference? According to Twitch Upon a Star, Herbie J. Pilato's biography of Bewtiched star Elizabeth Montgomery:

"Lizzie loved to watch science fiction / fantasy programs like the original Star Trek (NBC, 1966-1969) and the Gothic daytime soap Dark Shadows (ABC, 1966-1971)."

"After Bewitched, she delighted in shows like The Incredible Hulk (CBS, 1978-1982).."

So Montgomery was a first generation TOS fan. Who knew?
