Fact-Checking Inside Star Trek: The Real Story

Star Trek quickly dumped going after scifi writers because their miss to hit ratio was so high. Turns out TV writing is a different animal and most of those who pitched couldn’t deliver a workable TV story.

If they show wasn't so behind on getting scripts written, it would've been nice if they'd just bought sci-fi stories and had freelance TV writers adapt them for Trek. Of course, that might've also been cost prohibitive.

Well, we know GR had Fontana read a megaton of S.F. short stories and write summaries of concerning their suitability for adaptation, even though in the end they bought not a single one. I think one could make the argument that Fontana—not previously a sci-fi aficionado—probably gleaned a greater understanding of the form from that exercise.

Honestly, they should have bought the rights to Murray Leinster's "First Contact", which she summarized, and would have made a great Trek episode.
