Facebook Follies

I have a Facebook account, but it is under a surreptitious name. Being generally socially phobic and not in such a good place in my life I am not eager to talk to people from my past. And believe me it seems like everyone from my past is on Facebook. An old friend and I used to joke for years about where a particular girl from elementary school might be today. Low and behold she is on Facebook(and ironically my friend is one of her friends). I think the only person from here whose Facebook I have clicked on is Kirk Tights(and no I don't remember why I did, but get your minds out of the gutter).

And I'd say I actually know about 96% of the people I have friended IRL, or have at least interacted with them extensively via email. I'm not one of those people who tries to friend everyone in sight to try to inflate the number of friends I have. (If you look at my friend list, you may try to guess who the other 4% are... I'll just say that you'd be surprised. There's a reason why there's a running joke in Toronto fandom that I know everyone.)

I used to have that amount of known people on my list. I kept my FB reasonably private, but I've since been added by some other people in my industry - most I know, some are just adding to shill themselves.

I've gained work from that kind of interaction with strangers, and if I need someone to fill a slot - I know I could open up my friends list and find a few possibilities - so I don't mind it.

Generally though, if someones amusing I'll read their updates. If not... I'll skip them. It's no big deal to me. It's more like skipping news in the paper that doesn't interest me.

I don't have a lot of contacts right now (thank God, that's probably a blessing), and instead of clicking on the individual profiles of friends, family, co-workers, I just read my Newsfeeds. Even if I did have 500, I wouldn't waste my time wading through all of them.

I don't know why I get so polite sometimes and blindly accept invitations from "friends of friends" and people I hardly even know or get in touch with anymore. I guess I could categorize my contacts into two different kinds: My "inner circle" and my "outer circle," which should be self-explanatory. Right now I'd say I have a pretty good balance between the two. Having said that, I use FB mostly to post my rants, observations, important events, which is why I NEVER bother with those stupid game apps. I'm also more likely to read comments from people who actually have something to say about their everyday lives rather than what level of Mafia Wars they've reached.
