It's kind of a missed opportunity for the show. They've got one season left to go? Fine! Do something that helps develop the plot or actually is the result of the story so far. This was a serialized show, after all.

Why not have the first ever Romulan cast member? They could have made her a representative of the Tal Shiar and that would have led to much interesting interaction with Garak and the others. They could write her in as an advisor that the Romulans insisted on having on board allied stations.

They could have made her a refugee with information on the Dominion.
They could have made her as a hit-girl who came to collect on Quark and ended up sticking around for some reason.
They could have made her into a kind of genetically engineered wunderkind like Bashir, except she was an expert in tactics or something.
They could have made her an observer of the prophets or any near omnipotent race that the galaxy seems to be full of.

Basically I would have liked it if they did anything except to rehash a character that they were done with. If they weren't done exploring Dax then they already had all the opportunities they would have ever needed.

It would have to be a very strong character and well written to make people care about her that late in the game.

I don't think that's hard. I can think of a lot of small time characters that were only in a few episodes, but were still interesting. Vosh, Picard's non-serious bandit girlfriend. Tomalak was a great villain. Kat from BSG was good. It's all about quality over quantity of time spent with the character.

Another way of thinking is that they exist primarily to move the plot along. Ducat's deputy (I forget his name) wasn't a bad character and he had a pretty important role in a few episodes near the end.

I've said this in another thread, but for me, it would have been more interesting if they just created a new character for the actress. The character development from whiny officer with a victim mentality to "mature" was irritating for me. And the payoff of Bashir finally getting Dax just wasn't worth it to me.

The stories they developed for Ezri were just not interesting to me. I'd much rather have preferred a confident, dynamic character that could have been used to explore entirely new story lines.

The only thing that bothered me with Ezri was that we only had one season to get to know her, but that was clear from the get-go.

I think she deserved more exploration as a character... But i'm glad we got the one season with her at least.

I love that smile of her....

It seems to me that for some people Ezri is the Wesley Crusher of DS9.

I never minded Wesley and I ever minded Ezri. Considering the contract issues going on, the series wrapping up and trying to fit in the story fixing while also trying to wrap up the Dominion War stuff, they did the best they could based on the situation at hand.

I found Ezri's introduction into the show a bit jarring at the start and it seems that was intentional by the writers as they made it just as jarring for the crew on the show.

And they did explain her uncertainty in the show and having low confidence due to the rush job they did by putting Dax in her. Dax was one of the more legendary of the Trill, known by the Klingons, Federation, etc..... now here she was as a regular joe blow who didn't go through the rigorous testing other trills had to go through, with a lot of high expectations tossed onto her.

She did finally flesh out into her own character, but it is unfortunate that she didn't have more time in the series to show more of what she could do before it all ended.

Besides, that whole thing with the serial killer with the transporter gun thing?

^ To me, that's when she finally got into her character and separated herself.... despite focusing on past hosts and using that aspect of her past to solve the puzzle. She finally did what the previous Dax's did, which was to use that existing knowledge to be a Dax, but her own Dax.

At this point, she was no longer confused by herself and past memories, she joined properly.

I think they overplayed that, or the actress overplayed it in the beginning. It was almost like someone off the Disney Channel just walked onto the set. But once they started developing her and toning the nervousness/jumpiness/bumbling down a lot, she seemed much more put-together and attractive. On the re-watch, I found her to be much more tolerable in the beginning and even likable as they got her character going than I did during the first go 'round. I'm not an Ezri fan, but I like her okay.
