Do you wear glasses/contacts?

Been wearing glasses since I was 15. So over 25 years ... but it's been over the last 10 to 15 years, that I have worn them more often everyday.

It's mostly the luck of the genetic draw. My parents are both nearsighted, and congenital nearsightedness usually shows itself pretty early.

Yep. Sometimes we're just unlucky to be born with it, but it only tends to show up at around that age, I think.

I had to get glasses in 2nd grade, since I couldn't see the blackboard well enough-- or, worse, the TV. So I've been wearing them for about 47 years. My latest pair are actually bifocals. Makes me feel like Ben Franklin. :mallory:

So I have an appointment to get my eyes checked today, I plan on talking to the ophthalmologist about Lasik. It's tough in my job wearing bifocals, seems nothing is in focus where for more than an inch difference.

Yes, you get used to it. I started wearing glasses about 45 years ago, and every new prescription would require that transiiton period.

Even now, new readers take a bit of adjustment.
I still go through an adjustment period (several hours, at least) just switching between contacts and glasses with very similar prescriptions.

I mostly wear contacts because it's more convenient when I'm running, or doing photography, or even when I need to throw on the sunglasses. But there are days, like today, when I prefer to give my eyes a bit of a rest and just go with the glasses. I'm fortunate that I have the ability to choose, based on my mood and how my eyes are feeling with the contacts in.

I've worn glasses since the third grade; last I had an eye exam (nearly four years ago, Jesus, I'm overdue), my eye doctor said that I'm legally blind without corrective lenses and my vision is roughly 20/240. I can't do contacts; the idea of something touching my eyeball just squicks me out too much.

Yeah, I had enough trouble at the eye exam. I nearly had a panic attack when they told me they were going to put numbing drops in my eyes and then poke my eye with a machine to test the pressure. Thankfully you don't even feel it, but it really creeped me out to think about.

A few years ago, when I was working at BMC, I had an eye exam where they dilated my eyes without bothering to tell me first. My office was on the other side of the campus, so I had to stumble from the University side across the Talbot Green to the Maternity Building with my arm across my face and tears streaming down my cheeks. It was a nice bright sunny day. :rommie:

Luckily, I wasn't driving that day, because my car was in the shop, so I headed for the bus stop. Everybody got respectfully out of my way and let me get on first, thinking that I had just lost a loved one or something. :rommie:

I started wearing glasses for reading and computer work about 20 years ago and it's worked fine, but I noticed my distance vision getting fuzzier and I ended up with bifocals about a year ago, which I never got used to. I think on my next visit, I'll be getting two pair of glasses. Wonderful...

Seems like several of us started to wear glasses around 4th grade. I wonder what caused the deterioration in eyesight at that time in our lives?
It probably has a lot to do with school. You start reading more, you have to strain your eyes to see the board, etc. It's probably something elementary school teachers are trained to notice.

I've worn them since I was 4.

I had contacts for a while when I was a teenager, could not be assed having them now. I don't like the idea of having stuff in my eyes.

As to the laser surgery, went with a friend who had it and omg the PAIN.. and the descriptions.. "like ripping a bandaid off your eyeball every time you blink". I've also known people who had the surgery and after a while it goes back to some extent. What's the point of that, just getting less strong glasses? Anyway, would not do even if free.

I wore eyeglasses from 1975 to 2015. I don't know what happened to your friend, but when I did LASIC, there was very little pain. My eyes watered for about 2 hours, but after that were perfectly fine. Even if they go back to some extent, my vision is still going to be better than what it was and I should only need glasses for reading and driving acording to my doctors. Even then, I feel that a few years of not needing glasses is worth what I paid for the procedure....a cost that was much, much less than my deductible is for my medical insurance anyway.

I too wear glasses, for nearsightedness. Started wearing them in high school.

I didn't know that many of us TrekBBSers wore glasses.

I've had to wear glasses since I was really young. Very near sighted. Thankfully it hasn't gotten too much worse over the years though.

With so many of us TrekBBSers wearing glasses, it kind of feeds into the nerd appearance stereotype. Although a more obvious connection is that we are readers. Voracious readers or maybe just longtime readers. I, myself, read voraciously. When packing for a trip or just preparing for an appointment where I'll probably have a wait, the first and most important things I pack are books or other reading material. I carry a big purse for just this contingency. Books and pictures of grandchildren. You have been warned.

I agree with you, Velocity.
I keep a book in the car, a book by the bed, multiple books on the coffee table, and magazines in the bathroom....

First thing I do when I get to anywhere I am going to be waiting is to reach for one of them...

I've been wearing glasses since I was 11 years old. A few months ago I got my first pair of bifocals. I have a thing about my eyes, so I can't even imagine wearing contacts, just thinking about it makes me feel queasy.

Yeah, I used to read the cereal box at breakfast and still read just about every road sign and billboard when traveling. I need at least three books at once. I need two "backups" in case I finish the one I'm reading unexpectedly. Usually because I stayed up half the night to finish it.
