I've had glasses since 4th grade (1968-69). I failed a test because I couldn't read the blackboard. Apparently, my eyesight went south pretty quickly - because I don't remember having the problem before that. Kids are weird.
Funny, cataract surgery is practically painless. I highly recommend it, especially if you have cataracts.I've worn them since I was 4.
I had contacts for a while when I was a teenager, could not be assed having them now. I don't like the idea of having stuff in my eyes.
As to the laser surgery, went with a friend who had it and omg the PAIN.. and the descriptions.. "like ripping a bandaid off your eyeball every time you blink". I've also known people who had the surgery and after a while it goes back to some extent. What's the point of that, just getting less strong glasses? Anyway, would not do even if free.

Even if you need them, you can get by without 'til the school work starts getting to be something you really have to put effort into.
