I've had glasses since 4th grade (1968-69). I failed a test because I couldn't read the blackboard. Apparently, my eyesight went south pretty quickly - because I don't remember having the problem before that. Kids are weird.

I've worn them since I was 4.
I had contacts for a while when I was a teenager, could not be assed having them now. I don't like the idea of having stuff in my eyes.
As to the laser surgery, went with a friend who had it and omg the PAIN.. and the descriptions.. "like ripping a bandaid off your eyeball every time you blink". I've also known people who had the surgery and after a while it goes back to some extent. What's the point of that, just getting less strong glasses? Anyway, would not do even if free.

I was 9. My teacher found out because I was always leaning over my desk and scrunching up my eyes to see the blackboard. My parents, who both wear glasses for shortsightedness, should probably have picked up on it when me and my brother always brought pillows and sat in front of the TV when we were watching Superman and Macgyver. I remember them asking why we did it, and we said "Because we can't see."...
All the time. I'm near sighted so while I don't have to wear them all the time, I do anyway.
I have worn glasses since 4th grade. My teacher pushed my parents to get my eyes checked because I couldn't see the board. They kept putting it off, but she kept after them until I finally got glasses to correct my nearsightedness. They gave me contacts for high school graduation although I had never asked for them or wanted them. When I was pregnant with my first child I couldn't keep them in my eyes and went back to glasses full time. I tried soft lenses later but just couldn't make all the eye appointments with 3 little kids in tow. I still wear glasses and I don't plan to try contacts again or lasix. Had to get bifocals in my 40s.

On a side comment, I spent more than two hours trying to wear my contacts the first time I got them. However, when I put on a pair years after the last one, it only took me a minute. Go figure.

Funny, cataract surgery is practically painless. I highly recommend it, especially if you have cataracts.

Last year my eye doctor told me that it's time to start considering bifocals but I can wait another year before it starts to become noticeable.
I asked about LASIK surgery and his response was that my vision was so bad that even with corrective surgery I would still have to wear glasses and since insurance doesn't cover it I decided to pass.

Or a lot of kids just don't find the pressing need for glasses until 9 or 10. Even if you need them, you can get by without 'til the school work starts getting to be something you really have to put effort into. I have no idea, just spitballin'.

I was a big reader, and still am. I remember when I began wearing glasses in the fourth grade, I couldn't read except for school work and newspaper.
My aunt worked for my eye doctor for many, many years, so eye care was always important. It still is to me.
I've worn glasses since fifth or sixth grade (it's been a long time when you can't remember exactly when you started). I bowled in a league. The spots on the lane became hard to see and the pins started to get fuzzy. I've tried contacts off and on, but never cared for them. I can't see well at all without glasses (I don't even try the eye test at the DMV without them), but I've been lucky enough to always correct down to 20/15 in them. My real concession to age was getting progressive lenses about three years ago. I must say "progressive lenses" sounds so much better than tri-focals.
It's mostly the luck of the genetic draw. My parents are both nearsighted, and congenital nearsightedness usually shows itself pretty early.
