They claimed in the first season DVD set that the nature of the island and the nature of the smoke monster at the beginning. They also spoke how they were happy they could finally reveal that during Richard's episode. Sure, you could disbelieve everything they say, but I feel at least some of it has credibility.

Think of it like a road trip. They know the various cities they're going to stop at, including the final destination, but there are lots of different ways to get to each one, and lots of different people who can come along with you that would modify the experience to an extent.
