But, yeah, Scotty would never beam and lose Porthos. Scotty was competent. ;)

"I know this starship like the back of my hand"

THUNK.

:p

Though naturally that was no-one's finest hour...
Did you ever notice how much of the humor in that movie involved the characters failing at their own specialty? Sulu getting lost, Uhura failing to communicate, Scotty not knowing the ship like the back of his hand? :rommie:

I guess Shatner thought that would all be funny and a hoot for the fans to talk about. One or two examples were alright. Turning it all into one big running gag throughout the whole movie wasn't. I can understand that the Enterprise-A had just undergone a systems overhaul(hence the differences in the ship and its equipment between the end of TVH and the beginning of TFF)and was still getting her space legs. But a veteran and eminently skilled crew like this shouldn't be having all these problems. In the old show they seemed to have less trouble with far more complicated problems.

I know, I know. I'm overanalyzing this. It's my nature. TFF is such a flawed movie it's damn near impossible not to nitpick it.:p

^I figured as much Methos, any guesses on mine.

lol... Connor, Duncan or Quentin?

M

Gavin.

Mine is the name of my family of D&D characters. The first one, from 1982 or so, took the surname Silvercrest after his hair was magically turned white. His two sons and their children were all born with a white streak in their hair. Current D&D campaign is featuring the third generation of Silvercrests, and the fourth is growing up.

I took the name here so that I'd be recognizable to any of my D&D friends if they ever joined. Sadly, they never have. :(

Not to mention the Enterprise herself failing to be the reliable, state-of-the-art vessel she always has been (even more of a liability to the mission in TFF than in TSFS, operating with minimal crew and significant un-repaired battle damage)

Yes, the 'humor' is insulting to all the characters and their fans. This is my primary reason for disliking the movie.

Note that Kirk, however, while a bit self-deprecating, is never made to play the fool, and even his near fatal mistakes are laughed off without consequence.

On topic:

GNDN is of course a well known acronym in Trek for:
Goes Nowhere, Does Nothing

Being a TOS fan and having worked in film, I appreciate the in-joke by the props department when coming up with labels for pipes and conduits on the set of the Enterprise. A wink and a nod that this is all make believe, 'dangerous nonsense.'

At times, I also feel this way about my life. By taking GNDN as a moniker, I basically mean to remind myself to get up off my ass whenever I'm feeling lazy or less than enthused about whatever is going on. In other words, STOP going nowhere, and doing nothing. Sometimes it works :)

Just a real life nickname derived from my surname. I haven't been called like that in RL in a while, though.

I agree. It's not the worst Trek movie (just the worst TOS movie), but it certainly does beg for mockery. :D

That was pretty annoying, too, especially after the inspirational send off at the end of TVH. It was completely unnecessary.

Many nicknames are diminutives of proper names. William gets shortened to Will or Bill; Robert gets shortened to Rob or Bob; Johnathan gets shortened to John or Jack. Invariably, it's the first syllable of the name that is retained, and the end that gets lost.

And back when I was in high school, a couple of us opted to do things a bit differently, and to instead drop the first part of the name, and keep the end. My buddy Nathan, became Th'an rather than Nate. Greggory became Gory rather than Gregg. And I became Chard rather than Rich or Rick.

And in my case it simply stuck. My brother, sister and Ex-wife still call me Chard, as does my old buddy Ptrope (Our art forum mod, who I've known for over 30 years! Yikes!) So when it came time to pick a user name... Chard was pretty much the obvious choice. However in the early days of the World Wide Web, a lot of those early BBS demanded that a username be at least 7 or 8 characters long, and thus Chardman was born.
