Expensive shows often have few fans in front offices. Al Lad Jr. had to go to bat for Lucas and Star Wars too as part of budget requests.
This is actually a fallacy. Moonves was indifferent to Trek. It was expensive to produce and brought in little return on investement. But if Trek had made shitloads of money instead, he would have loved it.
Supposedly, he wasn't a fan of Sci-Fi/Fantasy and was quoted at the time, as saying that he didn't understand its appeal.
Probably true, but that’s a far cry from the ‘Moonves hates Star Trek!!!’ Reddit culture. If he hated it so much he wouldn’t have had it produced past Voyager.

There probably isn't anything Star Trek on Paramount's radar for the moment, not even the movie that was somewhat announced but now even the writers themselves are unsure if it ever gets made.
Same thing happened with the Viacom/Paramount/CBS merger years ago. It takes a while for the dust to settle with legalities and personnel before being actually able to invest money into new projects. Rinse and repeat. A shame this happened right on the 60th. We're not likely to see much of anything interesting this year, outside of what's already been made (SNW 4 & 5, SFA 2).
Missing anniversaries is never fun, but ultimately, they're just markers of time. Great advertising synergy if it adds up. But not a huge deal. I feel like a lot of fans put too much stock in them.
Working in the gaming journalism sector, this happens all the time over there. More so than with TV, really. People expect new Final Fantasy announcements, new Zelda announcements, all of 'em, "because obviously it's the 35th anniversary" and such. Development, not to mention getting budgeting clearance for new projects, isn't synced to anniversaries!
The "old" Star Trek is the opposite of what the new owners are aiming for. An optimistic, humanistic future in which humanity has overcome earthly conflicts, poverty, greed, religion, and war.

Gene was all about the money so he didn't even overcome this supposed vice. Conflict pervaded through Star Trek and it was the heroes solving problems that made it enjoyable. Wars happened even with TNG.
Let's not pretend that this "old vs. new" is realistic. Every single thing new Trek does, old Trek did.
This. Anniversaries are for fans and fans should do something not wait for an edict from on high.

The Cardassian/Federation War that (in Universe) didn't end until TNG S3. TNG S4 The Wounded made it clear the peace treaty was signed within the last year or so.
The Dominion War that lasted from DS9 S4 - S7.
