The registry of the Kelvin makes no sense whatsoever, especially when you consider that there have been Starfleet ships with three digit resistries. Look no further than Star Trek III, the registry of the USS Grissom was NCC-638, not NCC-0638, despite the fact that Starfleet already had plenty of starships with four digit registries. So why the hell does the Kelvin have a four digit number starting with zero, when a precedent for three digit registries has already been set?

It makes perfect sense since this movie is a de facto reboot. While we're being told that it will "respect" current Trek cannon, this does not negate the fact--which fact has already been established by the EW article--that this movie has free reign to re-write Trek lore as it sees fit.
I, for one, am happy about that. Old Trek was, for its day, very progressive, but with what we know now, it's seriously outdated. Hell, when's the last time you ever saw a woman command anything in the original series. We have more women in command now, in the USA and UK.

How does rebooting and updating Star Trek explain why they're doing something as plainly stupid as giving starships four digit registries starting with zero?
You people sicken me!
This is blatent racism against my zero brothers! Zeroes Unite!
Here's a link to the article as well (beware...it's DEFINITELY got some spoilers...which are mostly noted before you hit them):

J.J.Abrams from article said:''All my smart friends liked Star Trek,'' he says. ''I preferred a more visceral experience.''
