EW FullUSS Kelvin Picture

That darn zero. Zero is NOT canon.

This brings complaining about a whole lot of nothing to a new level...:p

The registry of the Kelvin makes no sense whatsoever, especially when you consider that there have been Starfleet ships with three digit resistries. Look no further than Star Trek III, the registry of the USS Grissom was NCC-638, not NCC-0638, despite the fact that Starfleet already had plenty of starships with four digit registries. So why the hell does the Kelvin have a four digit number starting with zero, when a precedent for three digit registries has already been set?

Because it looks better?
Maybe each shipyard paints the number differently?

And also one with two digits starting with a zero...

Who cares?

Because the Grissom was a wuss ship commanded by a pansy. It's only weaponry was probably an air horn.

"Real" Starships get 4 digit (and higher) registry numbers.

It makes perfect sense since this movie is a de facto reboot. While we're being told that it will "respect" current Trek cannon, this does not negate the fact--which fact has already been established by the EW article--that this movie has free reign to re-write Trek lore as it sees fit.

I, for one, am happy about that. Old Trek was, for its day, very progressive, but with what we know now, it's seriously outdated. Hell, when's the last time you ever saw a woman command anything in the original series. We have more women in command now, in the USA and UK.

How does rebooting and updating Star Trek explain why they're doing something as plainly stupid as giving starships four digit registries starting with zero?

Is THAT off topic enough for everyone? :D

The '0' in the registry is not a problem. Why still have USS in registry in Trek universe? The Kelvin looks a very nice ship. I'm not to sure about the Star Wars style laser turrets, but see how it plays out in the movie. The shots seen tho so far seem to be a very detailed model and quite a nice ship. However, I have seen Gabe's take on the Enterprise weapons by showing pulses instead of steady beams that we are accustomed too and it looked very effective.
