Yup, I'd guess these discovery helmets are just cooler looking versions of these Kelvin Klingon helmets. The both have the ridge down the center.

The helmets make sense logistically too. They add drama as the antagonists unmask so they can act, and the redshirt klingons could keep theirs on and not need to be made up for the scene saving time and money for other stuff. Moreover, a massive battle with dozens or hundreds of 3D modeled klingon warriors would be more impressive if the faces and other skin surfaces don't show. Organics are still not good enough to fool us (see Leia and Tarkin in RO), where modeled props and armor are done quite effectively with current tech.

It'll be interesting to see the effect that virus had on the Klingon race (assuming it's even mentioned). I always had this thought that those Klingons were cast out or considered weak by the Klingons who were unaffected by what happened in Affliction.

That's an animatronic Klingon mask. Discovery's Klingons won't have simple forehead makeup appliances but full animatronic heads like those worn in the Predator movies.

I just hope none of that ridiculous stuff about the virus is ever touched upon again. Take about twisting yourself into loops to explain something that never needed explaining. They can go wherever they wish with the look of the Klingons but leave that bad idea on the trash heap please.

The lights and cables make no sense if it's a simple Klingon helmet.

    Isn't that from Predator instead?
