Every episode of every series ranked by Playboy writer

This is a great read. Rounding out the top 10 in reverse order:

10. TOS - Amok Tme
9. TNG - Chain of Command
8. TNG - Best of Both Worlds
7. DS9 - By Inferno's Light
6. TOS - Arena
5. TNG - Darmok
4. TNG - Yesterday's Enterprise
3. TOS - Mirror, Mirror
2. TNG - Inner Light

and drum roll - the #1 episode from all the series ever

1. TOS - City on the Edge of Forever

Oh and the two at the very bottom - TNG Code of Honor and Voyager - Threshold. I cannot argue with those two being horrible.

A weird DS9 choice but a good top 10. But "Trials and Tribble-ations" at 13? "The Visitor" at 19? "Duet" at 32? Seems wrong.

These rankings are clearly based on whether the writer liked them, and not an objective assessment of their quality. Other than the obvious fan-service of COIE being number 1. It's an excellent episode, but after all this time, putting in first place is really just favoritism rather than whether it truly merits it or not.

What credentials give this guy credence above any other random poster/blogger on the interwebz? I can't find anything about him or any other articles by him that merit any credibility.

His commentary is neither insightful nor provocative. It offers nothing beyond what any TBBS episode ranking thread might.

What am I missing?

It's not a bad list. I don't agree with it 100% but it's for the most part on the right track.

Though going over the page linked in the OP of the top 100, I'm confused on something. Two-parters are almost all grouped together as one story, but the DS9 episodes Improbable Cause and The Die is Cast, which is a two part story have separate entries, as are episodes from the three episode mini-arcs from Enterprise's fourth season. Why?

How could it be anything other than a non-objective assessment?

How can you objectively judge whether Best of Both Worlds is better than Balance of Terror? There's no objective measurement. Its just this guys opinion. I choose guy because its playboy.

Why is it fan service to say COTEOF is Number 1? Why isn't it fan service to make Inner Light number 2? After all it hasn't exactly stood the test of time with all those 80s hairdos. If you want to be objective.
Objectively I'd rank ENT episodes ahead of all the other series simply because its newer with better special effects.

He got paid for it?

Plus, it's interesting to see all of the TV episodes in a single list, and each one has a mini-review; the author has done quite a bit of work to put this together.

The bottom two are actually TOS And the Children Shall Lead and TNG Shades of Gray.

An interesting choice in "Shades of Gray." While it is weak, being that it is a clip show, is it really worse than absolutely horrible episodes like "Threshold"? I'd rather watch "Shades of Gray" than "Sub Rosa" any day.

Yeah, really, is "Shades of Gray" the worst episode in all of Trek? Beat out by "And the Children Shall Lead"?

I do like the graphics at the tops of the pages. The one on part 7 seems to be missing something though.

I can certainly understand choosing Shades of Grey as the worst since it has no re-watch value. I'm not against clip shows per se, some times a show can deliver a really compelling story with a clip show, the Stargate shows really delivered quality clip shows. But that's not the case with Shades of Grey, Shades of Grey has maybe, what twenty minutes or so of original footage, which just consists of people talking about Riker as he lays on a bed.

Meanwhile, And the Children Shall Lead really is horrible. I don't get why Spock's Brain has the reputation as the worst of TOS, this is a million times more horrible.

Yeah, I'll gladly watch Sub Rosa or Threshold over those two any day.

Not a bad list . . . and a fun trip down memory lane. One can quibble with some of the placements, but, in general, what you expect to see near the top is near the top, and likewise for the lower reaches.

The point of such lists is not be definitive in any way, but to spark discussions.

Does also depend on ones preferences and biases, the author definitely seems a TOS/TNG fan. Personally, I'd have had "Duet" in the top five, but I'm a Niner (and worshipper of the Major) through and through.

It's obvious a lot of effort went into this, but I'm always shocked at how many people select City on the Edge of Forever as their favorite episode. I've never been really impressed by it.

"Inner Light" at number two! Let the howls begin... :rommie:

Yeah I didn't get that either. Given the huge TNG bias that list has, I'm going to assume the writer is a GenXer.

I don't see why "Arena" and "Darmok" are so popular but I otherwise mostly agree; I would place "Errand of Mercy," "Balance of Terror," "Amok Time" and "The Measure of a Man" higher.
I also like DS9's "If Wishes Were Horses," far from the best but it's good to have a fun/light episode and to not know for a while that the fantasies are actually aliens.
