ever tried this?

my bike is an old style yet new bike. its a reverse pedal braking bike with front and rear guards on the tires. Its made for a big person, one of the reasons why I got it.

In a desperate attempt to get back on topic: What, is there no public transport available???

With my student card I can use the busses here for free and even go to a couple of other cities (some 100+km away) by train.

You silly Europeans and your easily accessible public transportation.
When I lived in Davis (see previous posts) I could have taken the bus, but biking was faster. There was even a direct line from campus to my home--no changes required--that ran every15 or 30 minutes. I could leave the bus stop on my bike at the same time as the bus and get home just before the bus got there. It couldn't be faster and usually took longer because I would have to wait at least a few minutes. In addition, biking was free and the bus cost $1 each way (free for undergrads, but I was a graduate student). There was really no reason to take the bus unless the weather was awful, which is rare in Davis.

"old style" isn't really descriptive in that context, do you have a picture?

Yeah, get something with some gears, so you can build up some speed. That 6 miles will go by quick.

Ah, well. Hate to be negative, but I'm not very impressed, low-end, probably weighs as much as tank and the geometry won't feel as comfortable as it looks on longer rides. On the plus side, I doubt you can ride it fast enough for the brake to be a big problem and you won't have to worry about the bike getting stolen that much. ;)

For your needs it sufficient though.

actaully pretty light.
yeah. I have had other kind of bikes that were more than just 1 speed. I guess if I had to I could take the old bike out from the grass that is burying it and switch parts from bike to bike. The only reason I got reverse pedal is that every bike(2) that I got with hand brakes, the front one was the only one that worked, of course squeeze it in a hurry, you could go flying over the handles.

The just 1 speed is not the problem, the bike I usually commute on is single speed too (fixed gear in fact, but that's practically the same), you maybe just have to get out of the saddle on some hills. If you say it's light, ok, I guess that's relative. ;)

The coaster brake isn't necessarily horrible, but it's not as strong as normal rim brakes, you can easily skid (which is fun, but not always safe) and it depends on the chain working correctly (which it does 99,9% of the time, but when you're going downhill and that 0,01% happens, you're in trouble). Btw, on a bicycle you generally only need a front brake either, the front brake provides much more braking power in case of an emergency than the rear brake, which really only has the purpose of having a fail safe in case something's wrong with the front brake.

I am going to test out the road tomorrow, I have a 1hr 30 mins worth of mowing to do today.

ok well I have learned.

Best to travel on the yellow middle lines.

follow traffic

and the bike I use why not the worse, but it would be best that if go any longer to get a bike with gear, even though I have had one and don't know how to use it.

Say... don't you have bicycle courses in your country? Here we have them for our kids in school, and even for the adults.

Guys, you make the whole bicycle riding thing sound like a military special forces kinda thing.

I have taken my bike down to walmart before. Its through two light there and two lights back. I have treid to go the way my school is before(I didn't know I would be going to that school at the time) I soon found out that the hill and length of it was too much for me and I turned around and went home. There is none of that this time, straight to my school and back.

Now, I loathe cycling (nothing against it per se, it's just not my thing), so what do I know.

Yeah, I was just going to say you can't possibly have any clue about cycling. Italians do not use bicycles... ever.
Well, I'm sure you met more than one bicyclist while in Bologna, it's the most common mode of transportation for students in the inner city. You haven't truly enjoyed Bologna's porticoes until you have been run over by a drunken art student riding a rusty bike.

Another friend of mine cycled round Sicily on a tandem. Apparently everybody was being very nice to the "two funny gay guys on a weird bike" and they were invited to random meals and drinks a lot.
They aren't even gay but they didn't bother correcting that impression. 2 men on one bicycle was probably just too exotic for the Sicilians specially considering they just spent the nights sleeping under some big plastic canvas cover thingy on random fields.
Man, they have some stories to tell about that trip... Sicily will always stay in their hearts.
That sounds like an awesome story.

I would love to travel by bike to my job, but the only way to get there is down an major interstate and I doubt the cops would take too kindly to me riding a bike on the side of a highway.

I have found my old gear bike out back. I wonder, could I switch the transmission for the old gear bike to the 1 speed I have?
