Ever Notice His Hand Wrapped?

Doctor Bombay

Captain
Captain
I searched, but found no other thread or mention of this topic.

Watching "The Cage" I noticed for the first time that Jose Tyler's right hand is wrapped during the episode. I couldn't see if it was wrapped while he was on the surface of Talos IV, but it definitely is afterwards.

Any explanation for this to anyone's knowledge?

"The Cage" opens in the wake of a violent incident on Rigel VII, which killed several crew members including Pike's yeomen, and injured a number more. The ship is en route to Vega Colony for medical treatment for its injured (even though Earth is closer to Rigel than Vega is). Spock has a limp, as I recall. Presumably Tyler's bandaged hand is another injury from the battle.

Interesting thing about Spock's limp. Nimoy himself had a slight limp (how he got it I do not know), and he obviously played it up in The Cage. It can be seen in several episodes, and became more pronounced as he aged. It's quite obvious in several scenes in the movies, like when Spock steps out of the bleachers to join the others at trial at the end of ST:IV, and then when he and Kirk head toward the door after the 'aquittal'.

I feel like his run is affected by it too. There's an episode where Spock turns and runs away from the camera (hurrying to an emergency elsewhere on the ship), turning right...can't remember what ep it is though.

Maybe "Balance of Terror" where he runs back to the phaser control room.

The awkward running in "Arena" and "Balance of Terror" were not cases of Nimoy playing up the Rigel VII injury. That was just Nimoy's own terrible form, probably made worse by his Starfleet boots with Cuban heels. Shatner found it funny, and he joked about Nimoy's running in Star Trek Memories, if I recall.

They were trying to visually suggest a battered, but still able to work crew. Might have been interesting if they showed sickbay with recovering crewmembers alternating between resting and catching up on work. Maybe they were low on medicine/whatever powers their wound healing devices?

What I love about it is that these are very subtle touches and are easily missed if you're not paying close attention. Excellent creation of reality. So many fights left the characters unscathed, but some of those early efforts showed the damage. Kirk's broken hand in the second pilot and his contusions in Shore Leave...

Sounds like Balance of Terror maybe? He runs awkwardly there just as you describe, and Spock didn't run too often, perhaps because of Nimoy's limp now that I think about it.

(even though Earth is closer to Rigel than Vega is)

Those are two of my favorite stars so this comment (like their repeated appearances or mentions in the series) interested me. But do we know this for sure? Measuring distances between two stars is tricky IIRC, but Vega is 25 LY from us while Rigel is about 800. Seems as though it would be hard for Earth to be closer to Rigel than Vega is to Rigel. Maybe I misunderstood.

You're considering distance but ignoring direction. The two stars are 144 degrees apart in the sky, meaning they're in nearly opposite directions from Earth. Therefore, Earth is roughly in between them.

The Cuban heel probably accentuated NImoy's actual limp as he ran. In TOS his limp is difficult to see because he is usually shot from the waist, or at lowest, the thighs, up. But when you see him crown to heel, there is that little telltale of the sagging hip of a limp, and as he aged, his body would tilt in that direction with each step. Oh, and there is more awkward running at the beginning of A Private Little War.

Sounds like Balance of Terror when Spock runs to the Phaser control room because Tomlinson is not responding to Kirk’s commands.

Yep, quite right. As someone who is always very happy to see both in our sky at the same time, because it's relatively rare due to just what you described, I'm embarrassed. I knew I was missing something. Thanks!
